Reccomend me a bass!

Hey all!

My band is starting to get serious, and i need to step it up a notch!

I mainly play grunge/stoner rock/punk/rock. I rarely slap n' pop and i mainly use a pick, (although i do also use finger style and play a lot at the neck for a real bassy tone) I only ever slap and pop for a laugh or when i just feel like it, i'd never record it.

Anyway the furtherst i will go price range is the £1200 mark (keep in mind im in england so unlike you yanks i dont get my stuff real cheap )

This could be anything from a P Bass delux special (the one with the gold pickguard yuk!) and P/J set up, i have'nt tried a P/J setup but im very interested! Also maybe the Aedryone (sp) P bass (not the jazz version)

That's more around the 500-600 range, obviously it wont be as good as something at the 1000 area but obviously cheaper bass is a big advantage.

In the more expensive area, im thinking Rickenbacker 4003, Gibson Thunderbird, More Expensive Fender perhaps, maybe ESP not sure.

Anyway im dont know that much about other brands such as Warwick etc, i always thought they were more slap n pop style basses (although im sure they can play other styles properly obviously).

All opinions and help and links! would be very much appreciated.

2. In case you want something more traditional, get a P Bass, maybe a Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub or another 'superior' clone.
3. How about a PM? Sandberg looks cool, sounds awesome and very very versatile.

Where abouts do you live in the UK?

I live in Hull, well near it... oh dear yes i know.

But these shops called soundcontrol are popping up every where, there's one not too far from me where I got my Spector Rebop 4 Dlx from.

I went to the one in manchester and newcastle too and they've got some great basses now. Finally things are looking bright. All the people there are serious about playing, and really nice and helpful, and cause I'm a student the guy in the shop sold me it 150pounds off.

But to the point, these places sell, spectors, fenders, SCHECTERs, which are awesome play for the pound...(bang for the buck?) some bigger shops have warwicks, too. They also sell basic Musicman Stingrays for just short of 1200pounds too. One I'd personally look at is Invalid Link Removed
Very tidy price under your budget and in my opinion spectors have better build quality compared to the likes of a fender.

Plus with the introduction of the 08 fenders, they're shifting the old ones off for around 700quid. At the top end of your budget you start getting basses like rickenbackers, which have been sold for a very good price at soundcontrol too.

Hope you can gain something from this. Have a look around their website, if a shop near you doesn't have one in stock to try out, they probably have another shop somewhere with one in that they will gladly get across for you to play. as my local store has done in the past.

Can't go too wrong with a P bass for what you're playing. If you can track down a MusicMan SUB (sadly discontinued) that's also a good option and really have that workman vibe going for them.

Fender MIA J-bass (i find it more versatile than the P but u should try both)

Yeah this came with a retro fitted gold pick guard, but I decided to make it era correct with the 13 hole tortie. You're right about the ugly, check out the back, man that's seen some wear, sounds awesome though and weighs nothing.

Defiled, try the bass gallery it's down in camden. I was born in london, well not too far from it where abouts? These soundcontrol shops tend to be a northern thing. DAMN northerners...

Find a used Spector Euro. It is a very versatile bass and would provide a good punch for the music you are playing.

Stingrays are not a deep and bassy instrument. They are an aggressive, mid-rangey bass that can be EQed to have somewhat of a deeper sound.

If you play at the neck, then try a Gibson SG or EB-3 bass (you'd probably have to go used). Its the sound you want.
