Reccomend me a bass!

Thanks guys yeh it's always fun shoppin for a new bass, i just am fairly new to it, and i dont know what each things sounds like, i will have to go London one day and go from shop to shop and find as many as i can

Hey all!

My band is starting to get serious, and i need to step it up a notch!

I mainly play grunge/stoner rock/punk/rock. I rarely slap n' pop and i mainly use a pick, (although i do also use finger style and play a lot at the neck for a real bassy tone) I only ever slap and pop for a laugh or when i just feel like it, i'd never record it.

Anyway the furtherst i will go price range is the £1200 mark (keep in mind im in england so unlike you yanks i dont get my stuff real cheap )

This could be anything from a P Bass delux special (the one with the gold pickguard yuk!) and P/J set up, i have'nt tried a P/J setup but im very interested! Also maybe the Aedryone (sp) P bass (not the jazz version)

That's more around the 500-600 range, obviously it wont be as good as something at the 1000 area but obviously cheaper bass is a big advantage.

In the more expensive area, im thinking Rickenbacker 4003, Gibson Thunderbird, More Expensive Fender perhaps, maybe ESP not sure.

Anyway im dont know that much about other brands such as Warwick etc, i always thought they were more slap n pop style basses (although im sure they can play other styles properly obviously).

All opinions and help and links! would be very much appreciated.

I would recommend a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass. They can be found used for around $1,000 US. They have active electronics and two noiseless jazz pups. IMHO, they have a fabulous range of tones, are bomb-proof from a reliability standpoint and widely available. One note is that if you are buying one used, you'll want to make sure that the one you buy has the 18 volt pre-amp, not the earlier 9 volt version. Good luck!

At the moment £1200=$2400, so you'll be able to get the same £1200 guitar for about $2400! My advice is to spend £600 ($1200)on a bass in New York and you can use the remaining £600 on a cheap flight and three great nights in the Big Apple.

Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass's are about £700 if bought in the USA at the current exchange rate. But there is the problem of customs duty returning to the UK!

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near a musicman, partially just because I think they are the most overrated, overpriced, pieces of junk out there. I've never played a Gibson Thunderbird, but the cheaper Epiphone version is absolutley amazing for the price, so I'm assuming a Gibson would be that much better. But overall, I'm partial to Fender Basses. I'd go with a Precision Bass, I think the tone is better out of them than A jazz bass.
