As a reminder I did say "popular". i.e., songs that many in the audience immediately recognize after a few opening bars. I realize this a tall order - it seems that most of the recent hard edged female vocalists are either obscure or are doing what passes today for "country".

Yeah, if you want popular you have two choices: the more retro-sounding female pop singers like Katy Perry or Jessie J, or some recent country like Miranda Lambert.

I gueeeess maybe Paramore or the Pretty Reckless if you want actual rock bands with female singers. I've done a couple of songs by the latter and was surprised to see a few people singing along, but I'm not going to pretend that they were ever popular.
