Hello,

All right I would like a new (to me) bass. But I am having a hard time finding what I would like in one. My budget ~$1000 USD, I don't mind hunting for a decent used bass. That will actually open up my wife to letting me spend more if it's hard to get. I play mix of funk, latin, blues, jazz, and rock. I would like something a bit unusual for my area. Musicman basses are constantly $800-1200 asking price here, There are allot of Fenders on the scene, too. Not tons of Warwick's, but they are probably an easy third place. I don't mind any of those brands, I like them all in various aspects, I just want a different sound.

My wants/limits:
5 string 20mm+ string spacing (minimum 19mm)
35" scale bolt-on neck w/ 5 or more screws (sterile B string if 34")
Non-Asian manufacture (I have to many of these)
Non alder, swamp ash, or poplar body (if it can be done in my budget)
Non maple neck (if with in budget)
Humbucking pickup(s)


If other woods are out of my price range I would like to stray from these combinations:

alder body / maple - rosewood neck / stacked jazz pu's (anti-hum/bucking)
swamp ash / wenge-maple - rosewood neck / bartolini mk1 (asian = split coils, USA = humbucker, I still have the asian ones)
poplar body / maple - rosewood neck / P-Bass pick ups

Thanks for reveiwing my spec. sheet, I hope there is something out there

Would the Lakland 55-02 fit your specs. I know the Skyline series starts in Korea but is dressed in the USA Chicago facility. Same USA electronics as the USA models. 35" scale 5-screw bolt-on neck. Best B string in the business. Very versatile pup/preamp combination so you can play all the styles you mentioned. You should be able to grab a used one for $1K or a little less. Check the FS forum here at TB. I just got a new 55-02 and am loving it.

Hi! I would third the nomination of a Lakland 55-02, except its made in Korea, but finished in the USA. I think its the best for your variety of music with its versatile sounding electronics - preferably the newer Lakland p/ups and preamp.

As an alternative, you MIGHT be able to find a used 5 string Modulus Flea but it would be about $1500.

I'd go Lakland!

I can't think of anything that matches all those conditions!

Closest I can think of that is close on the biggies (scale, spacing, materials) would be Warwick or Modulus or a Zon Sonus 519 but not likely in the $1k range, even used.

Nothing comes to mind, and I have lots of basses on the brain. I would say save more of your money and think about selling a few of those Asian manufacture basses you say that you have too many of, and then revisit when you can really afford to meet all those specs.

Seems almost like you want a truly custom bass without the custom price. Understandable, but very tough to find!

+1...looks like dude wants a $1K custom axe...

Here's what I got for $300...

5 string 19mm spacing
34" scale bolt on, nothing sterile about the B :scowl:
Made in Indonesia ... Who CARES where it's made??? :scowl:
Basswood body... wood IS wood, ESPECIALLY on a opaque poly finish...:rollno:

Maple neck...WHO MAKES A NON-MAPLE NECK FOR UNDER A GRAND??? Besides, I for one, do not like wenge (icky). :spit:

Single coil pickups...humbuckers are for people who like to disguise their tone ;) :p
