I think the Yamaha TRB's are in your specs, too, or close. 35" and 19mm spacing, for sure.

Hello,

All right I would like a new (to me) bass. But I am having a hard time finding what I would like in one. My budget ~$1000 USD, I don't mind hunting for a decent used bass. That will actually open up my wife to letting me spend more if it's hard to get. I play mix of funk, latin, blues, jazz, and rock. I would like something a bit unusual for my area. Musicman basses are constantly $800-1200 asking price here, There are allot of Fenders on the scene, too. Not tons of Warwick's, but they are probably an easy third place. I don't mind any of those brands, I like them all in various aspects, I just want a different sound.

My wants/limits:
5 string 20mm+ string spacing (minimum 19mm)
35" scale bolt-on neck w/ 5 or more screws (sterile B string if 34")
Non-Asian manufacture (I have to many of these)
Non alder, swamp ash, or poplar body (if it can be done in my budget)
Non maple neck (if with in budget)
Humbucking pickup(s)


If other woods are out of my price range I would like to stray from these combinations:

alder body / maple - rosewood neck / stacked jazz pu's (anti-hum/bucking)
swamp ash / wenge-maple - rosewood neck / bartolini mk1 (asian = split coils, USA = humbucker, I still have the asian ones)
poplar body / maple - rosewood neck / P-Bass pick ups

Good luck dude. I think you'll need it to find something with all of the restrictions you have laid out here.

And one note on the 34" B String...you are dead wrong. There are as many great 34" B strings as there are bad 35" B strings. String length does not guarantee good tone. I have a 5 string 33" scale with a B string that is better than most 34"s I have played.

Well the TBC I have for sale fits everything except it has an ash body. But at the same time it is WAY under your budget and a VERY nice bass. You could get my bass and still have about $675 to spend on other things.

+1 on the Lakland, though you might want to try an Ibanez soundgear or maybe a Music Man sub if you manage to find one.

save up some more quite a bit more and get a custom or get somthing like a warwick jazzman/$$ and sell the basses that you have "so many" of if you dont want them dont have them.

OK, at that price range you'll have to compromise somewhere. A Gibson TBird Studio 5 is EVERYTHING you want, except- set neck, 34" scale, and 17.5mm spacing. Other than that, it's got it all. I don't see how you could get any closer without spending alot more money.

That's right, but at $1K, he's going to have to give up something on his list. Not Asian was the best thing to give up IMO, and he'd still end up with an American brand set up in Chicago.

I totally agree Mike...the entire list is pretty restrictive...seems to me that the OP will really miss out on some excellent basses unless the wish list is revised.
