Recommend me a bright, punchy, aggressive sounding bass

Hmm...so far it seems we have:

G&L L1500, L2000, & Sb-2, Fender Jazz, Gibson Ripper, Rickenbacker, Spector, Ibanez, Sadowsky, Zon, and Stingrays that are all being recommended for ONE tone.

Well, if it has to be traditional style, I'd say Fender marcus miller WITH a M-retro preamp. Brightness and punch for days. And insane sub dub sounds too, the mid sweepable eq is very versatile.

Stingrays are of course brilliant too. I personally dislike the slap tone, but I know I'm in the minority.

From modern there would be a lot more options.

I think a G3 is a very good choice for an aggressive sound, if you like the feel of them. They always sit good in any mix, and cut through or blend in when you want them to.

It's like I said, there is no perfect bass.

If you haven't chosen a bass I would recommend a pre Ernie ball musicman like a good 80's stingray

Any p bass with a moderately hot pickup. I have the typical p bass with seymour duncan quarter pounders and its pretty punchy and agressive. Especially with a tube amp and a pick.

A traben with the custom pickup combo and t3 electronics. Punchy beyond belief and I usually have to dial down mids and treble to fit in some band settings. Cuts through like a beast. I would have said a phoenix but I know most people aren't into the gawdy flashy stuff around here

Rickenbacker. I'd also recommend MM Stingrays and Sterlings, but I think the OP said that he didn't like their highest string.

Rickenbacker or a p-bass. String it with round wounds and play with a pick. Get some effects that distort a little, and turn up the mids on your amp.

Hey guys,

I'd like to get a new bass soon and I think I wan't something really aggressive sounding. I'd like to go bright and punchy as opposed to round and warm (my alder/rosewood Fenders do that just fine)

I definitely prefer older or vintage basses, something with tradtional style. Passive or active.

I was initially thinking StingRay but I always have issues with their G strings.

Maybe a 70's ash/maple Fender? A Gibson would be cool. Maybe something like what Mike Dirnt used in the early days. I think he had a G3. That kind of had the tone I'm looking for.

Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

They aren't my thing sound wise but have you considered dingwalls? Thats pretty much the tone they go for, the playability and everyting is supposed to be great on them. They have more classic looking shapes, granted the multiscale does still make it look more modern.

Damn near all of them, and I'm not kidding.

One heck of a zombie thread we have going on here. This was a post of mine from 15 years ago. I've had several children since then, and lost a lot of hair in the process.

I've probably owned all of the basses mentioned in this thread at this point lol.

Some of favorites were/are:
StingRay (still have that G string issue, but some are worse than others, fight me)
Spector NS-2
Rickenbacker (except I like mine with flats now)
Fender Precision Bass Special

Honorable mention:
Yamaha BB3000

Had a few Sadowsky's, I think the Jazz basses grind more than the Moderns, those are pretty polite sounding if you ask me, but they do cut through. Thunderbirds are cool with a pick but sound more on the thicker side ( I have a 79), same with the G&L stuff, very big sound, almost too much. Never did get to try out a Zon, but did get to play a Status or two that were cool, but not really my thing.

Really your standard P's and J's can get pretty grindy through the right amp, but I will say the PJ combo is kinda where I'm at for aggressive tones. IOr just about anything through a SansAmp or Darkglass pedal will get you there.
