How about tuning the whole Steve Harris set to D-standard (DGCF) and drop the D down to Db (C#) occasionally? That's only half a step difference you would have to deal with.

That would work if I wasn't learning, like 5 songs a week. The band I play in is a pretty prolific and I often really need to simplify things. But it's a good idea.

So, I use Rotosound Monel Flats (45-105) and I love them.

I play in Eb tuning on a P-Bass.

Some of our songs we play with a Drop D (or Drop C# as it were) and it is just too dang loose with the 105.

So I need a heavier low Eb/C# string.

What would you suggest? I use the Hipshot Bass Extender so I want to be able to use it in Eb and C#, it's ok if its a little tighter than the 105 when in Eb, I just want to make sure the string isn't flopping around when I'm in C#.

I think if I have the budget I would consider a 5 although I prefer 4's. I don't find the notes south of C# terribly useful.

The D'Addario XL160BT set, 50-120, works great on DGCF tuning. When tuned down, the tension on the 50-120 set is about the same as a regular 45-105 set at regular EADG pitch, and since they are the same construction they feel the same as well. XL's have a little bit of upper bass/lower mid scoop, which helps retain clarity for down tuning. As with any change of string sets, a slight adjustment to the nut slots, a tweak of the truss rod, and attention to the intonation may be necessary.
