Recommend me a String Gauge...

So, I use Rotosound Monel Flats (45-105) and I love them.

I play in Eb tuning on a P-Bass.

Some of our songs we play with a Drop D (or Drop C# as it were) and it is just too dang loose with the 105.

So I need a heavier low Eb/C# string.

What would you suggest? I use the Hipshot Bass Extender so I want to be able to use it in Eb and C#, it's ok if its a little tighter than the 105 when in Eb, I just want to make sure the string isn't flopping around when I'm in C#.

Replace the 105 with a 110. Done.

You could try the Rotosound 77 jazz flats; I use a 45-105 set on a Thunderbird tuned to DGCF, they work pretty great

"Monel" refers to the nickel-copper alloy used for the outer wrap on the Jazz 77 Flats.

Just like Ernie Ball "Slinky Flatwound" and "Cobalt Flats"... Two names for the same thing.

I usually order custom sets and singles from Jason at Fret Nation. I would suggest you get in touch with him at [email protected] and find out if he might be able to special order a single Roto 77 110.

Jason might even be able to put together a custom set, 45-65-85-110, so you won't end up paying for the 105 you don't need.

You could put together a custom set of Chromes if it turns out that you can’t get singles / custom sets of Roto 77s.

I've always been a fan of D' Addario's .45-.100 Regular Light Guage Roundwounds and their .45-.100 Half Rounds, but I have also thrown the Ernie Ball .45-.100 Super Slinky Flatwounds into my mix. Kind of the best of both worlds and also with the Colbalt it adds a little more punch in the highs I found than typical warm flats.

Unfortunately, according to the info I just obtained from Jason at Fret Nation, Rotosound no longer has any of their strings available as singles. That means no custom sets with Rotos.

You can still get custom sets of D'A Chromes Flats, though.

We must have been emailing simultaneously, as I got the same result.
Good news is you don't have to change the low E THAT often so I might be able to keep some Harris packs around and just deal with it. And maybe I'll try chromes once.

How about tuning the whole Steve Harris set to D-standard (DGCF) and drop the D down to Db (C#) occasionally? That's only half a step difference you would have to deal with.
