Recommend me some prog metal

Conducting from the Grave

My two favorite bands, my two favorite songs. Might not be specifically "prog" but it's still good. If you like guy wanking on the guitar (I have to admit, I really do) then the second one is beast.

EDIT: Just listened to OBSCURA... wow. This is what I've been looking for. Thanks. :bassist:

I have been on a prog metal kick for about a year too.
My favorite find has been a Polish band called Riverside.
Interestingly, the lead singer is the bassist.

Agreed. Riverside is very cool and interesting to listen to. Lots of prog without a lot of wanking.

I'd say Baroness would be worthwhile (really like me some Baroness these days) and Isis as well. Both of those bands are actually doing something worthwhile. Well, until Isis decided to call it a day. :crying:

I've been listening to Dream theater and Meshuggah for a while and went on a lil prog metal binge lately. Got some Cynic, Aghora, Gordian Knot and The Faceless. So far I really like Aghora and The faceless the most so I'd like some more recommendations based on that.

First off, let me say that you obviously have great taste (Cynic, Gordian Knot, Aghora...). :)

Recommendations in the DT vein:
Make sure to try Andromeda (their debut and Chimera in particular), who are one of the few bands who do DT-influenced prog metal right. http://www.andromedaonline.com/

Haken are another one, they were recommended before in this thread. Link Removed

A bit more on the power metal side but still pretty proggy at times are Symphony X (try V - The New Mythology Suite or The Divine Wings of Tragedy first). http://symphonyx.com

A good next step would be Ark, their album Burn the Sun is a real gem and quite unique in sound. Too bad the band broke up. http://arksite.com/index_old.html

Recommendations in the Meshuggah vein:
You absolutely need to check out Textures. They are clearly influenced by Meshuggah, but also by Devin Townsend's more melodic, epic approach. One of the best bands around. http://www.texturesband.com

More in the Gordian Knot vein:
At War With Self (project led by Glenn Snelwar, who was on the first GK album) - http://www.glennsnelwar.com
Exivious (excellent proggy fusion metal feat. two of the Cynic guys and the drummer from Textures) - Link Removed
Relocator (my band, our debut features former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian) - Link Removed

As others have already mentioned, Pain of Salvation is very good as is Riverside's first album. I haven't gotten into their other stuff (don't know why). I recommend Pain of Salvation's Entropia, One Hour by the Concrete Lake, The Perfect Element, & Remedy Lane.

I don't think anyone here has mentioned Zero Hour. I like this band a lot. One of the things I like about them is that the bass is quite prevelant and audible in the music. The bass doesn't just ape the guitars which is usually the case in Heavy Metal music. The bass is used in a very cool-sounding rhytmic way. I like how a lot of the time, the guitar and bass have their own distinct parts, rather than just playing the same thing. Check out their third album A Fragile Mind. They had two different singers, and they're both very good. Very powerful almost like Dio.

Edit: Time Consumer, if you have any problems finding Zero Hour's stuff online, send Herrick a PM and I'll upload something. I don't know this board's policy on this sort of thing, so I apologize if this is not allowed to be discussed.

it isn't exactly "metal" but social ghost is a great prog. band from my city. they have one CD called war without a gun.

plus (not to add a plug or anything) but my band plays prog. metal and has heavy dream theater influence. http://www.facebook.com/RhapsodyofAvalon?ref=ts Desert's gold is the first song we wrote after getting rid of our old singer and finally switching to prog. metal like we wanted. our next song will be even heavier then that.
and this is a cover of under a glass moon

I've just bought both of Baroness' albums and a couple of Isis cds; I've been listening nonstop to Isis now.
