Recommend me some prog metal

Mastodon (prog rock, extreme metal and stoner, all in one band.), Death (their last 3 albums), Haken, Karnivool (great hardcore/prog metal band from Australia), Porcupine Tree (actually a REALLY good prog rock band, but the albums Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet fit in the prog metal genre), Opeth (death metal with prog rock influences), Pain of Salvation and OSI.

PS: Those bands, with the exception of Haken and Death, aren't your common wankfest-prog-metal, but I think you'll like them.

Sweet, I already listen to mastodon, i'll check out those other ones fer sure

If you want some really pretty far out there stuff... check out the Cosmogeneis album by Obscura. Did I mention their bassist absolutely rips on a 6 string fretless... which works way better than it should in a death metal band. Towards the wankier end of the specturm, but they actually groove pretty hard once you develop an ear for it.

+10000 for Opeth.

Also check out Redemption (very good bassist, he's got a few videos on youtube) Symphony X, and Obscura.

EDIT: Looks like Tyler beat me to Obscura!

Forgot Meshuggah. They're a extreme metal band, but there are plenty of polyrhythms and wacky time signatures but everything is based in a 4/4 cycle. They also use 8-string guitars and the singer's style is a mix of death growls and hardcore shouts. Listen to Catch 33 or Nothing, they're their best albums.

Are some of you skimming my OP, lol, I said I started off with meshuggah, lol. Got the whole discography last year, I like they're whole catalog really.

I should reiterate I lean more towards the heavy side of progressive, checked out a bunch of suggestions and like I said, really stuff like Aghora, Meshuggah, and The Faceless.

Out of the suggestions I've sampled most and Really like Obscura, Centaurus A, Protest the Hero, and Iron thrones.

Keep em comin tho, lookin for new music helps me pass the time at work really well, lol.
