You're not going to like them. I've tried many many times. If I were you, I would just knock down the tone knob and unplug the tweeter in your cab. You'll be much happier with it.
...I find that I'm interested in cutting highs and living in low-mid land these days...... So, what set of flat wounds would you suggest for a person's first ever set?
I really don't get all the recommendations for Chromes. I mean, here's a person with apparantly no experience with flatwound strings and you recommend the one flatwound string that doesn't sound like a classic flatwound at all???
I'm not sure how they could be mistaken for anything but flats. Yes, they're a little brighter and retain that brightness a little better, but to my ear, especially as a long-time rounds user, they're unmistakably not rounds.

...but I don't think they can be mistaken for being any other flats either (with the exception of the Fenders or any similarly voiced "modern" sounding flats I haven't tried).

Going from the Hi Beams (stainless steel rounds) to flats is a rather drastic transition.
How about rounds or semi-rounds at the mellower/less zingy end of the roundwound tonal spectrum? Would you be open to that?
