Recommendations for budget friendly lightweight bass

I've played one of those at a music shop and I was amazed at how lightweight and well-balanced it was. I'm so used to Fenders being big and heavy.

Sunday night SwitchGear posted a mint american performer jazz bass at US $800, wich weights 8 lbs. Had it shipped conus and with a hard case for $849. It is my birthday gift, and my wife even put a part of the money.

Never even touched a jazz bass before, and I think I made a good deal. Now that I have the T-40 (to play sitting hahahaha) and the jazz, my next porpouse will be a musicman.

I recommend SwitchGear. Such a nice guy.

Some of the best stock pickups and electronics made. I rank this right up there with my G&L L2000s.

They're not honest. Found one listed at Sweetwater for 5lbs 14ozs. Wanted to make sure this was actually true so I called them about it. Yes, they replied on the phone, our basses are carefully checked and spec'd by our techs. That's not a weight from Fender, it's from us...
When I got it it weighed 7lbs 4 ozs.

Five piece neck construction
Dual acting truss Rod
Hipshot tuners
High quality pickups
The four string models are under or around $1000

I would recommend a Mercalli or a Thundergun

I feel I need to set the record straight on this now tho... After I further complained to Sweetwater re this weight discrepancy (and sent them a photo to prove it), they offered to make it right by refunding me $100 on this bass on my Sweetwater credit card. An offer I accepted... :)

Ibanez Soundgear.

There are examples of Fender style instruments that are truely light but they are few and far between. The smaller Soundgear body results in far more consistently light instruments. They are available in a dizzying array of options and Ibanez quality control is among the best.
