I used to have a Honda Prelude that was a blast to drive, despite front-wheel drive. A friend has a Mazda Miata that's very fun to drive.

So you want a car that is FAST, FUN, REAR WHEEL DRIVE, NIMBLE, NOT A P.I.T.A. RELIABLE and under $5000.

80's Mustang

You can easily find a straight, clean, rust free example for less than $2000 and 302's are also common and cheap and easy to build to 350+ HP. You still have 2 or 3 grand left to upgrade the motor, suspension, stereo or whatever else you want to make the car even more fun.

A mid 80's Mustang with a 302 with a T-5 tranny weighs around 3300 lbs. but you can very easily get the weight down below 3000 lbs with aluminum heads and other parts, and doing other "modifications" like removing useless heavy stuff from here and there that you won't need..

The stock suspension and brakes are acceptable as is, but bolt on upgrades are cheap and will make the car handle and stop like a race car.

Any Ford engine will fit in the engine compartment of the "Fox body" design and swap kits are available for engines from the 351W to the 460.



I've owned 4 of these 80's Mustangs (and a couple dozen other cars from many companies) and the grin/dollar factor just can't be beat by any other car.

Not sure if these are compatible with what cars you guys get there.

Here a common old one was a Datsun 1600 with a Japanese import FJ20 EFI twin cam turbo engine. Really cheap but an absolute weapon. Up boost, set of injectors and whola 350hp in a very light good handling car. I have to agree with the Datsun Z range too. They are pretty good fun cars that are tough, make great power and handle. Heaps of good parts and cheap.

Over here we get Mazda RX4's and put in either small block fords or chevs. Easy 10's car.

You could go the sleeper. The lightest grandma car with a big engine bay and a small block again. Seen some rippers over here like a ford cortina mk1 with a 429 in it. Blinds in the back and every single cosmetic part original not to give it away.

The best one I've ever seen here is a 383 chev in a Holden gemini making 650+hp. 9.6 sec on street rubber. The guy drives it to work every day! Totally insane :p

My Bozo in Law (sister's husband) had one of those back in the '80s. He dropped a little Buick V6 into it, a 3.8 Liter ( I think) It was already pretty nimble but got insanely fast without adding that much weight.

On the downside: It's a roller skate. Your butt'll be about four inches off the ground. It's funny looking. It's REAL cramped inside. The seats led to constant kidney-area bruises for me.

On the upside: Once you're inside (My Bozo in Law said watching me get in the driver seat looked more like I was putting the car on like a jacket.) it's a blast to drive. His cornered like it was on rails. With the V6 in it, it was a rocket. With the four cylinder, not so much.
