Recommended Listening for Walking Bass Suggestions Please

I'm wanting to get ahead of my New Year goal of getting on top of walking bass.

I've been given a lot of useful advice of how to approach getting started on playing but I wanted some recommendations of listening for inspiration. I don't really know who the goto's of walking bass are, and what outstanding albums / tracks are out there (classic and modern). If you have any recommendations please let me know so I can start putting together some inspirational play lists.

Do I like Jazz, yes but it's a relatively new thing for me so I'm still exploring it as a genre.

OK, maybe start with the album Bags and Trane.

It's an album from Milt Jackson and John Coltrane, with Paul Chambers on DB.

It's a pretty straightforward hard-bop album, composed mostly by blues tunes.

In this album, you can hear the bass particularly well.

Check out the tune "Late Late Blues", Paul Chambers destroys it!

The tunes are easy to follow, because it's blues, so you'll know where you are.

Check that out, you'll find everything in there, including a lot of walking bass.

I'd look at Jethro Tull's Bourrée too:

I'd recommend Quincy Jones' Walking in Space album, with Ray Brown, and others, on bass.



This tune leads in to Walking in Space (from Hair). The entire album is outstanding, but I love Ray Brown's Walking bass lines in particular.

This one is tasty with Roscoe Beck on bass. He outlines the notes of the chords really well while swingin' the rhythm.

Lots of great examples of songs to listen to, and there are many more.

But another suggestion is learning some of what goes into walking bass lines, breaking them down and learning what's happening, learning how they're constructed, etc. Ed Friedland's book Building Walking Basslines is a great resource:

We Get Requests by Oscar Peterson Trio is one of my favourite albums. Ray Brown really lays it down in this album. His solo at the beginning of You Look Good to Me is my favourite. Really anything by this particular trip is worth your time if you want a masterclass in walking bass lines.
