Recording an E-Drum kit using MIDI?

Going to be recording in a couple days, and, well, ive never really done this part before.

Going to be using a presonus firepod, and using the midi out of the drum kit (roland TD-3) into the midi in of the firepod, and record everything (aswell as a few tracks each for guitar and bass) at once.

Will be using Cubase, and afterwards will be using a drum VST (maybe EZDrummer, maybe "Discreet drums" ).

And, well, do i just add a midi track in cubase? and will it all route itself, or will i need more than one midi track?

After its all been recorded, how hard is it to use the VSTs?

I'm not sure of how cubase works so forgive me if i am a little wayward but dosen't your e-drum need to trigger the software like BFD or something.

The midi out from the roland will not transmit audio.????

So i would think you need to have/create a midi channel with designated plugin/drum software assign your midi controller to said channel and away you would go ....

The other thing that is even easier to do (unless of course you can drum) is to create a drum map...

I thought it could track the sequence automatically? Im really not sure to be honest!

I was told on another forum that it will map the midi, just wont get any audio? (will add the VST to the track afterwards)

And will be using the normal output going to a small 15 watt guitar combo to use as a monitor.

I'm pretty sure that you will be recording just the midi so you can assign whatever sounds to whatever you want.

I'm using a V-Drums/TD-3 setup that controls Toontrack's DFHS on my PC which is running Cubase SX2. I downloaded a mapping for the TD-3 which I had to tweak slightly in the DFHS VST. The hi-hat tracking was awful to put it mildly, but everything else tracked very well. I ended up having my drummer bring his real hi-hat and we put a small diaphragm condenser mic on it and it blended nicely with the rest of the drum samples. The drum tracks absolutely smoked once we started tracking in this manner and they sound FAR better than the sounds in the Roland module.

Check on Toontrack's site to see if there are any mappings for EZDrummer. I have never used it myself.

Really !!!!

Well if thats the case that is kinda cool.

As stretch says i just run my midi out of my DTX into a dedicted midi interface and trigger BfD with and it works great.

Setting up triggered HH's can be a pain in the ass as stretch said , but if you can use real hats you'll be laughing.
