Recording my tone

I've got everything setup for recording and it works fine. Here is what i do to record bass and guitar. We plug the bass or guitar though a pedal and the pedal go though to the interface for recording and that works fine. But what we want to do was to record our tone from our amps.

Not sure where to go after we plug our guitar though to the amp. The recording interface have a intrsument jack socket and Mic XLR input.

For amp recording, I would suggest a mic.

A Shure SM57 should do the trick.

I'm currently using a condenser mic to make my lessons for my site. I will be posting my first finished lessons sometime after 2 weeks or so and maybe longer depending on the editing situations.

Put a mic in front of your cabinet and don't worry about it*.

*it's 3am and I'm drunk as hell. I've been kicked out of the hippest places on south beach. Seriously- mic/cabinet/forget about it. I doubt my opinion will have changed when I've sobered up.

Depending on how much your amp or head (not pre) is part of your tone, you can:
1. If it's got XLR out, use it into the board as a pre
2. Take the speaker out, feed it into something like a hot plate so the head has load, and take the out from the hotplate in like a pre.

If you're using a solid state amp it doesn't need a speaker load, you can just take a DI or lineout straight into the recording interface. A valve amp however definitely needs a load, be it speaker cab, speaker simulator or dummy load.

You might want to look at software amp modelling as well. Things like Guitar Rig and Ampeg SVX are so versatile and tweakable, I'm sure you can recreate 'your' tone in there. Plus they can be made to record a bypassed signal which you can reamp later if you don't like it. I recently purchase the Line6 Pod GX interface that comes with Pod Farm software. It's fantastic value for money. Sounds incredible.
