Recording packages

I know that buying gear in packages is not always the best way to go, but I do not want to chase around for all of the pieces. I want to set up a home recording studio, nothing fancy just something that works with out to much hassle. I have been looking at spending $300-500. I have always had good luck with Tascam /Teac products. I was thinking along the lines of the Tascam DP-008 package or the US-1641. I am open to any other suggestions. Thanks

The US1641 offers a lot more flexibility, comes with Cubase LE so you will be ready to go if your computer and your skills are up to speed.

you might have luck searching craigslist; in my area, theres tons of people selling off parts of their home/other studio, and in those cases you can buy "packages" fairly often.

I'll have my son figure out the software, he uses garage band. The computer I was thinking of using has 2 gig ram, it is a XP Media pc, 2.4 dual core CPU. It is about 5 years old. Do you think that is enough computer?

I know, and that is what I would do with just about any other piece of gear. I just do not know much about this stuff & don't care to research it all out. I don't want to buy some obsolete set up and fight with getting it all to work right.
