recording tone

Partially, I think. Recordings aren't necessarily any more of an objective sonic truth than your ears, but they do provide an alternate perspective, and that can be hecka helpful, especially considering your ears were right in the thick of the performance rather than out where the audience would be.

With bass in particular, though, so much of it is felt live rather than heard, and a recording can't always reflect that element.

Of course, a ton of it is dependent on the method you're using to record in the first place, I guess.
