Recording using Amp vs. DI

I'm recording using the XLR out on my amp right now, but apparently the signal drops down to 'line level' and I have to use another preamp input box (firebox) to bring it back to a recordable level.

Am I getting the sound from my amp recorded to the point it can be noticed, or should I just skip the amp all together and plug straight in? Thanks

Last CD my band recorded, we recorded the amp both from the speakers (2 mics, 2 different positions) and a DI recording as well. Gives you more options when you're mixing.

Can you notice it? Your ears should be able to answer your question. Record with the XLR out from your amp, and record direct, and see what you think.
