Red Sparowes

Ok, as promised...

I checked Red Sparowes out tonight.

Greg uses a Music Man Stringray bass through a Mesa Boogie Pulse/ 750 Big Block and a Mesa Boogie 610 cab. Pedalwise he has an EH Electric Mistress, a Line 6 Delay, a Schumann Lion (!!!- which he bought and than had it converted to a Lion X), a clean/ overdrive switching pedal for the Big Block, and a Crybaby Wah.

The gig was pretty good. They have a projection screen with various footage running in the background. Not as good video-wise as the last time as I saw Godspeed You..., but it definitely helped to set a nice atmospheric background.

The guitars (all 3) worked very nice together and sounded great but the bass sounded a bit muddy, which was unfortunate. This could of definitely been the room and not having the amp properly eq'ed. I didn't care for the highs of Greg's set up, unless the Electric Mistress was switched on. Greg also rocked the pedal steel for two songs.

I talked to Greg briefly after the set but mainly about the Schumann pedal and about the tour itself. He was definitely a down to earth fella.

I am glad I went but it was definitely more of a show to hear all the various instrumentation live more than anything else. Their stage presence wasnt anything great, but I didnt expect it to be.

I do like Explosions in The Sky, but I prefer Red Sparowes alot more overall. I am getting sick of all the Godpeed rip offs though (I am not referring to either Red Sparowes or Explosions as being such- as they both are clearly not, but rather just mentioning that for the last 3 years tons of very unoriginal epic instrumental rock bands have popped up due to Godspeed!)

I am pretty sure it was a 105Q but not completely sure. I am sayin gthis because Greg is so into keeping the low end of the bass intact and took the time and $$$ to update the Lion to a Lion X.

Chainwise- well some pedals were in the front and some in the back so I am not sure what the order definitely was. I couldnt follow, not did I try to the patchcord layout. (I was just trying to make sure I caught all the gear before it was broken down- I was too far away from the board to see what he was playing during their set)

I know that if he was facing his pedalboard, the Line 6 was to his left with the Bigblock channel switch pedal behind it/ to the right of those was the crybaby/ to the right of that was the EH Electric Mistress in the front and the Lion X behind it.

I saw this thread dredged up and have seen them in a very small room since then. His gear changed quite bit since then and I got a really detailed look at the rig. It's now as follows:

Musicman Stingray 4 -> Boss TU-2 -> Fulltone Bass drive Mosfet -> EHX Electric Mistress -> Dunlop Crybaby (535Q, I think) -> Line 6 DL-4 -->Gallien-Krueger 2000RB into Mesa Powerhouse 6x10

Just thought I'd update it for those who wish to know! :D

dude i love you! :D

i've got a sample of greg and i'm dying to get that tone. it sounds so destroyed but at the same time so amazingly beautiful. have a listen if you want to.

Vegas, you're my favorite.

Aren't Red Sparrowes a side project for some of the guys in ISIS?

I love ISIS to death, I just haven't had a chance to check out RS... what're they like?

The greatest blend between more traditional Post-Rock (Explosions In The Sky, Mono, GS!YBE) and the newer, heavier, more genre bending stuff (Russian Circles). Plus they use lap steel like you never imagined it could be used.

is he using the big blockish deluxe electric mistress? and why would he use a 535q? i would think that a 105q would be better.....

I love these esoteric little gems on TB. I went on a music splurge a while ago and picked up everything that I could by Isis, EITS, and Red Sparrowes. RS is my fave. so far, but I'm always searching for good music.

Can you guys turn me on to some new stuff in this genre. Is Russian Circles a good place to start? What else would you recommend?

Sorry I can't contribute to the gear questions.

Thanks.
