Red Sparowes

Heres the deal with Grails-
GO SEE THEM LIVE JUST for the drummer. He is one of the best drummers that I have ever seen and the best in post rock bands.

MY PART II (non repeats from part I)

Morgion, Caspian, Rachels, Isis, From Monument to Masses, Don Caballero, Karate, Battles, Tortoise, Cult of Luna, Pelican, Battle of Mice, American Analog Set, Dirty Three, Cul de Sac, Eluvium, Menomena, Sigur Ros, The Big Sleep, Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, Flying Saucer Attack, Saxon Shore, Mono, Rodan, Maudlin of the Well (pre- Kayo Dot band), God is an Astronaut, Hrsta, Mum, On! Air! Library!, Because of Ghosts

Again, I could list 50 more...
Good list. I listen to everything I've bolded. And dang dude, I just bought GIAA's entire discography and a shirt. :)

Well that is awesome. But I just realized, not who I meant to say. I do love Maps and Atlases a lot. But the group out of Nashville is MAPS:ninja:

How did you get that together?

I've never listened to Maps...ill have to check them out.

But yeah the venue in Baltimore, The Ottobar, actually sent us an e-mail asking if we were interested in playing. I was really excited, normally I send them an e-mail asking if we can open for touring acts I like.

i love all the bands were talking about, but.... how are mono and menomena in the same category? granted, labeling these bands is kind of contradictory. but imho (and im from their home town, portland!) menomena are pop compared to pelican, mono, russian circles, ect ect x1000. just my 2 cents

Also, a quasi-local and fellow TB member shoutout: Maps and Atlases. Pretty cool group out of Nashville.

I saw them in Madison, WI and was pretty disappointed. They played great but started a half hour set fifteen minutes early. It just seemed like they didn't want to be there.

Anyway, I caught Red Sparrowes at the Black Cat in DC (great venue) and they were fantastic. As I recall, they're less an Isis side project than a post-metal super band.

I'm surprised a discussion of post-rock hasn't even lead to a mention of Boris or Sunn 0))).

Boris= Metal
Sunn 0)))= Sludge

Its not totally out of question for Post-Rock fans to like these bands, but they aren't altogether that relevant.

So I listened to Russian Circles' Station and Enter yesterday while the wife and daughter were out. I had the stereo so loud the pets all retreated to the basement and I could feel every note in my bowels.

This is exactly what I needed to hear at this point in my life. It was one of those YES moments where all the stars and planets aligned in one serendipitous crescendo.

It was like that first drink of water after running a few miles :)

Or that first shower after a week in the woods :D

Or the first time having heterosexual intercourse after a year in Turkish prison...:eek::eek:

Anyway, you get the point. Now I think I'll check out Mono.

Be prepaired for a jump. Russian Circles is my favorite band, so I understand exactly what you're talking about. As much as I love Mono, Godspeed You!, Explosions In The Sky, etc., hands down the closest band to my ears is Red Sparowes. With everything else you're taking that Russian Circles epic feeling and turning the intensity (read as: literal heaviness) down a notch or three.

Godspeed You!, Mono, Saxon Shore, or however many I could possibly name are heavy in their own way, but not the same. Stuff like Isis and Pelican are just as heavy, if not heavier, but (IMO) don't compete with Russian Circles' melodic ability.

Versus Isis? Boris definitely hits post-metal at times and Sunn 0))) is kind of the logical conclusion to Red Sparrowes & Isis style droning.

I suppose you have a valid point. Like I said, it isn't totally uncommon for Post-Rock fans to be into either of these bands, but not really what I think about first when I think of Post-Rock. Then again, that's me. I should have included the obligatory IMO in that one.

I guess we're hearing different things. Sunn is a drone band in the style of Earth's Earth2 album (the start of doom metal influenced drone music) who now has more a black metal influence (see Black One). Boris started out doing Earth style drone with a Melvins influence (their name taken from a Melvins song off of Bullhead) and have gone on to include more of punk influence (see Pink) and 80s Japanese metal (see Smile). Isis is pretty much a band HEAVILY influence by Neurosis and Red Sparowes takes that sound and gives it more melody with more beauty (and less brutality) but neither is close to drone music.

My take on post-rock is that it was progressive rock for the independent scene that came from the post-punk bands (see Slint's Spiderland album as heavy influence on post-rock) who couldn't call it prog rock because of the connotations of it the name. ;)

For me, no one has been able to top the sound that Godspeed You Black Emperor has created. A few bands come close. I haven't heard the names of Sparrows Swarm And Sing or Mountain Men Anonymous mentioned so I'll throw those out there.

I bet if today hadn't been so gray and buzz-killing, I would have made this exact argument. But no, I'm down from all the rain and lazy from not enough sleep and I felt like copping out with the 'opinion' clause. :hiding:
