Red Sparowes

I guess we're hearing different things. Sunn is a drone band in the style of Earth's Earth2 album (the start of doom metal influenced drone music) who now has more a black metal influence (see Black One). Boris started out doing Earth style drone with a Melvins influence (their name taken from a Melvins song off of Bullhead) and have gone on to include more of punk influence (see Pink) and 80s Japanese metal (see Smile). Isis is pretty much a band HEAVILY influence by Neurosis and Red Sparowes takes that sound and gives it more melody with more beauty (and less brutality) but neither is close to drone music.

My take on post-rock is that it was progressive rock for the independent scene that came from the post-punk bands (see Slint's Spiderland album as heavy influence on post-rock) who couldn't call it prog rock because of the connotations of it the name. ;)

For me, no one has been able to top the sound that Godspeed You Black Emperor has created. A few bands come close. I haven't heard the names of Sparrows Swarm And Sing or Mountain Men Anonymous mentioned so I'll throw those out there.

YES! It's indie-prog, in the sense that is it pretty, epic, expansive, "progresive" (not so much technical, though). Now I realize why I like post-y stuff.

haha, sweet. I like this. Spiderland is pretty god damn amazing, but took a lot of listens before I grew to love it rather than simply appreciating it in historical terms.

Concerning Sunn O))) and/or Boris being post rock, eh, one could make a case I suppose, but I don't quite throw them into this mix. I do love them dearly though, so yeah. Wata has the greatest guitar tone I've ever heard, saw those two bands on the same bill a few years ago and was blown away. Spiritually and physically, 'twas quite the wall of sound.

Yep, silly genre names. Wish they could just go away. I like the fact that it's not technical in the playing and compositions. A nice contrast to many prog rock bands.

Regarding Red Sparowes, I'm hoping they get back to having more lap steel in their music. I found that element to be missing form their last full length.

I've missed when they've come to town. I did catch Sunn and it's the only time where my entire body has been vibrated with sound. Wata has TWO Space Echoes in her rig. I'd like to just get one.

I'm not big into genre classification , but I like a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread. I'm not sure they'd be classified as "post-rock" (whatever that means) but two others that I like that are along these same lines are Kinski and Kriedler, the former being a bit more on the rock side and the latter having some strong krautrock influence.

For anyone that's into Mogwai (going to see them next week) and Explosions in the Sky....be sure to check out a group that I'm in called Choose to Find out of Boston. The guy who writes all of the music is really into a bunch of this stuff so there are certainly elements of them in there. The first album was cool but the new album that we tracked a couple of months ago will be more rockin. Anyway....for anyone that's interested. Very cool band indeed. Link Removed
