REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

Here's a crappy iPhone photo from yesterday's gig at Bose corporate headquarters. The Reddi sounded amazing through the L1 system. It really did sound like an Ampeg B15, but louder and clearer. I heard some farting here and there, but I think that was just because I didn't have any limiting and some transients probably just shook up the L1. Up until this point, I had only used the Reddi for studio work, but now I'm convinced I need to use it for every gig, no matter how good the PA system is.

I can understand what you mean about the L1's. They sound great, but a real PA system packs a lot more umph. All I have to say is it's so easy to set up and get a great sound out of it with minimal tweaking. The whole band minus the drummer ran through L1's. The guitarists used tiny tube amps that were mic'ed and everything sounded so well balanced and clear. If you do smaller bar gigs where you need to bring your own PA, this is a great way to go. Super portable too.

I think they've done better. Not sure of the exact model name of this L1, but I was told it has better bass response due to the larger 'bass module'. I didn't find it lacking at all. As soon as I plugged in and hit the first note I was pleased. Of course, I've been told the DI makes a big difference. :ninja:

I just checked, this is the Model II with B2 bass module.

I have to look into what subs this one gig with the Bose tower system uses. I did a gig a few years back with the original L1, and they needed 4 subs for me, and it still sounded thin on the bottom. But at this gig, the soundmen crank the subs so much sometimes that it's offensive. I doubt very seriously they're Bose, but I'll check Saturday.

But now you know why I fly with the REDDI and bring it on every single gig! There is no PA cheap or crappy enough to not notice the improvement in the bass sound that the REDDI brings.

So my friend and I were talking yesterday and he noticed that that I had my REDDI at our last show. He said that when he did some recording a while back in town, the owner of the studio told him "Go from your bass into this red box first then do whatever you want with it." My friend replied "Don't you want to mic my cab?" To which the owner replied "I don't mess with any of that any more, I haven't found any amp that sounds better than this box."

I hear you. I used to be one of those "the venue/cheap PA/audience noises eats up most of the subtleties" types, too. I guess it's one of those things you have to hear for yourself before you believe it.

The one time I might have a difference of opinion with this gentleman is if I were using a tube amp through a cab for distortion. I do like the sound of my pedals through the REDDI so it'll also work extremely well, but purists for whom that power tube breakup is important might prefer micing. Clean tones, though, that's pretty much how I feel. I love micing cabs, but I just don't feel the need to do it anymore with the REDDI.

Would you not run the amp signal to the REDDI first, then to your cab to still get the breakup of the tubes, or would the REDDI calm it down too much?

If you did that, then the REDDI wouldn't have any effect on the amp sound since the 1/4" out is pass-thru. But you could do a split and record both, then blend them together to taste.

EDIT: I was more questioning the DI side of the REDDI. End EDIT

The tube breakup is just an electrical signal that gets sent to the cab and reproduced by the speakers, so would the REDDI be able to send that distortion on to the control room without loss of that tubey crunch (I realize the engineer in my story was saying to put the REDDI before any amp whilst you are advocating a scenario where putting a tube amp before the REDDI is beneficial)?

If you're talking about using the REDDI for a speaker out DI to pass the tube amp distortion to the board directly, the REDDI's not made to do that and it could lead to injury to both the amp and REDDI. So no, I'm not advocating that scenario at all. I was just pointing out one possible use for micing a cab even though you already have a REDDI. And honestly, I'd probably just use a pedal instead ;)
