I was a big Suicidal Tendencies fan in high school in the early to mid 90's, but I followed them because I loved the guitar work that Rocky George and Mike Clark laid down. They were an amazing duo, but didn't get a lot of attention. I always respected the bass work, but didn't pay a lot of attention to it.

Recently I dug up some their songs that I really enjoyed. Since I play bass now as opposed to guitar, I really tried to key in on what Trujillo was doing. Man I am blown away by the funky grooves that he threw down in some hard rocking songs. It was great stuff. The way his grooves blend in with the song is amazing.

I have come to the conclusion that I like his Suicidal Tendencies work much more than I do what he has done with Metallica.

Am I crazy, or does anyone else feel the same way?

IMO Robert was even better when he played with Infectious Grooves

Duuuude great post: I rediscovered Infectious Grooves recently and thus the handle....was in college when the first album hit, and LOVED "Lights, Camera.....Revolution."

Hell I wrote it in another post, but Metallica are waaaaay outclassed with him in the band: the fact that the band asked him to "play with his fingers fast like Cliff (Burton)" shows they had ZERO IDEA what talent they had in their camp. No offense to him but he makes them look even more fake: since he got in they've tried to toughen up their image...my old guitarist buddy feels Trujillo is better than the other 3 COMBINED and I can agree....lol

Robert's one of the main guys that got me into bass. He really stood out in Suicidal and his bass lines really got my attention. Great bassist, highly under rated. I saw them on Craig Ferguson playing For Whom the Bell Tolls. He put some good grooves in there.

Rob's a terrific player. Great phrasing, tone, and technique. I think his stage moves and choices in appearance are off-putting to some folks, which periodically gives him a bad rap. I've never understood that position, but I've seen/heard it discussed many times.

My introduction to his playing was when he joined Metallica. I didn't think anything of it, but enough people were talking about his work prior to joining Metallica, so I checked into it. The first track I listened to was "Please Excuse This Funk Up" by Infectious Grooves. Very tasty playing on that tune. The next I heard was "Violent and Funky" which isn't technically demanding, but is an absolute endurance run.

I LOVE Metallica, but just think they're not challenging themselves like they used to: their music is BORING. This was a band that pushed the envelope so much that I know I was looking forward to the next album for sure.....Load was horrible, the St. Anger album was great but reviled by most, though.

Trujillo is a great fit because of the power he brings to the band, but it's just that he is a versatile musician with people who stopped trying to do different stuff.

I totally agree with you that he is a terrific player. The talent is unmistakable, IMO. I've never seen any discussions about his stage moves. Personally, though, I am really put off by it. Whatever he is trying to do, it just totally does not appeal to me at all. I have nothing at all against him personally, but his stage presence, I hardly know what to say. It is extremely distracting. Of course it won't keep me from listening to the music.

Trujillo is awesome, and the Metallica gig, well, who wouldn't take it. Even if you don't care for them now playing their old tunes would be awesome, and you can't complain about the pay or the exposure. If he ever leaves Metallica to do something new he's set. Good for him.

As yo why Metallica seems to have lost their songwriting edge, well, it happens when you aren't young and angry anymore and maybe life is a little too comfortable...
