To bgavin and others who share similar opinions on the matter: The following is not to be read harshly. I'm just looking for an understanding. I don't understand why I see posts all the time in threads like this one requesting startups in the audio product manufacturing industry to reveal all their data plots, proprietary technologies, weights and capacities, etc. with high detail. There are three truths to specifications in the audio product industry.
1. Specs that require measurement involving equipment hardly any musicians own are readily made up by marketing departments of these companies or at least are spec'd according to what is marketably positive. Most of these specs are flat out unachievable within even 1 standard deviation of what's quoted. I know that, you know that, lots of people know that, but these companies get away with it anyway and it helps them sell products.
2. Specs that are legitimately measured are done in environments involving favorable acoustic room modes/acoustic amplification to achieve the desirable measured result. These results are aimed for again because marketing and industry competitiveness require certain numbers to impress large demographics of buyers.
3. No individual nor group of people will ever get this industry to agree upon one standard of measurement or integrity of specification. As such, companies who do readily supply engineering data and response plots to their customers are at a comparative serious disadvantage. This is why hardly any companies ever supply them.
Redstar products may seem to be drivers in a box like most products on the market, but there's a reason that's the case as well. Customers want sufficient sound pressure in as compact a package as possible. They expect certain visual aspects in product design, and the majority shy away from radical departures. If proper engineering regardless of aesthetic appeal were the trump card in the industry, everybody would be purchasing Bill Fitz. boxes. Manufacturing businesses like to sell products, and try to align their products with consumer preferences. Manufacturing businesses also must try to achieve as high efficiency in their production as possible, as the lowest and least wasteful cost points, which usually means compromises. Additionally, innovators shy from full disclosure of proprietary IP from fear competitors with far greater production efficiencies and market penetration might dominate a newly wedged niche.
As I see it, until there's a reason for an upstart especially to proffer up honest specifications and their intellectual property, there is no reason for new businesses to disadvantage themselves in the market to win over tiny minority of individuals who wish to see detailed specifications and graphs and who possess the equipment necessary to verify such specs and graphs.
Someday in the future I plan to offer my own line of musical products that have taken me a long time, lots of money, and lots of effort to design. I'd like to make a living someday with said products. I also believe highly in ethics, integrity, honesty, and quality. As soon as there's no competitive disadvantage to plot honest plots and specs in this industry, my products will be among the first bared with full disclosure. I suspect a lot of small manufacturers in the industry feel likewise.
