Refinish/Touch Up

I just bought a blem Jack Casady bass for way cheap.
I haven't seen it yet, but I have three days to return if it's too bad.

So I have 2 questions:

How much do complete refinishes generally cost?

How much would a touch-up cost if it's just a small blemish?
(The finish is black, which I'd imagine to be the easiest to do.)

Blemishes, if small won't cost all that much, but they may still show some. Depends on the skill of the person doing the repair. It's impossible to give you a price without seeing the blemishes.

A complete refinish will be more than you want to spend.

Why not wait for the bass to arrive first? Then after you've set it up and played it you can decide if you like it enough to keep it. If you keep it and the blemishes bother you, take it to someone in your area who does good work with finishing and get an estimate.

I'm just looking for a generalization. Closer to $50, or closer to $300?

For example swapping out a pickup is generally around $75 in my area, could be more or less depending on the type of pickup and electronics and whatnot

A top quality refin on a solid body would cost more than $1000 from a professional...way more than the JC costs. You should focus on spot treatment of any MAJOR blem area - and live with it or mitigate it yourself if it's minor. There isn't a lot that a pro can do that an owner can't - if the owner does his homework and takes time and care with the work.

autobody painter,one that does`spot' work all the time,should be absolutly no problem to repair it,overlaying the whole body with clear is always best i won't argue a bit there(but it is black),the trick(s) will be,apply no silicone if you do intend to have any paint work done(it's sooo hard to remove),and dissasembly(by you) would be the way to go at least partially,,,i'm an autobody person with 30 years`in it' if you aproached me i'd just do it for beer money(since i love bass's of course i live a million miles away

it's the `blend area' you have to worry about just like a car if you `rub'(buff) or just wear thru the thin(er) blend area later you'll see it(the layers),hope i confused you!(not really) PM me if you want but that's what i'd do=spot it and enjoy a low budget repair or dissasemble and have it spotted/total poly overlay/polish,,i thought the `road worn' look was dasheeee!?

You need to post good pix so we can see the problem - so far, you have provided no actual info. I just got a Casady myself that needed minor neck repair - did it myself, no problem - and it's a great player.

thanks for the info guys! at least now i have a bit more idea what to expect. I don't really know the nature of the "blemish" yet. It could look cool or it could be hideous. I figured I'd start my research now since I will only have a 3 day return window. I'll have pics on Wednesday when it gets dropped off.

Good idea to start early. A factory blem may be something you won't notice or care about - if not, post pix as soon as available.
