Double Bass Refinishing my Engelhardt C-1

IMG_0191.JPG IMG_1105.JPG IMG_1102.JPG I am currently refinishing my Engelhardt C-1 and definitely new to this so I have a few questions....I have the old finish completely stripped down to the raw wood so what are the next steps? Any recommendations on finishing products that are made specifically for musical instruments? The fingerboard is maple that had been painted over with saddle (leather) paint and I would like to put an ebony stain on it, but concerned how the neck would feel with just ebony finish on maple. Should I add a coat of epoxy? Also when I was tightening the bass down to the table to work on it, this dowel rod fell down inside the bass. Is this the sound post, and is it important to put it back in there? How does one go about glueing it back in? The pic of the dark bass is the finish I'd like to end up with. Appreciate any advice or suggestions.
