Refinishing.

So I'm currently resorting a Samick Artist Series Precision Bass for a school project. I've taken it all apart, sanded off the gloss/clear coat and now I'm stuck.
I'm not sure whether to sand it down to the grain or paint now to save time on re-coating the plain wood. I'm also unsure whether I should actually paint it at all, staining it instead. I don't think the wood is an extremely nice colour (A sort of yellow).
What to do??? Any response would be appreciated.
