Refusing to play at places where smoking is allowed

That is truly an insulting response.

You manipulate your definition of team player to support a filthy smoking habit.

In reality if a band member can not stand the smoke than It IS YOU WHO IS NOT A TEAM PLAYER for not supporting your non smoking member

Remember that the tobacco companies kill 500,000 of their best customers every year

And I find YOUR biased answer insulting.

Majority rules, so if you are the only one who minds smoking, your out.

In my area, you would be a lonely non-working bass player.

Nah, reality is actually right in the middle. If neither the smoking nor non-smoking member are willing to concede, they are both just standing for their position. They really aren't on the same team in regards to the smoking debate.

There is no right or wrong. People who want to smoke, smoke. People who don't want to smoke, don't. Both sides should be polite and respectful. Smoking in an enclosed practice space with a non-smoker, or blowing smoke in his face, IMO are disrespectful. Otherwise, let 'em smoke.

I am a non-smoker, but I am amused at people who act like cigarettes can strike a bystander dead with one whiff.

OP, I would gladly accept you in a band. I also don't care for being around cigarette smoke. The stench soaks itself into your clothes and your gear. It's awful. The bottom line is you don't have to play anywhere you don't want to. However, I think it would be best that, when forming a band, this rule is laid out in the beginning so everyone knows, and hopefully you can find bandmates who agree.

I would argue that having non-smoking establishments has opened them up to much more people who might not have gone out to see a band otherwise. I know it's true in my case; I'm much more inclined to go and see a set now than before when there was smoking.

As long as the bars in your area all have to do the same (so they're all equal), after an adjustment period, people usually do adapt.

There was a faily political post removed that you probably responded to as well. edit: I guess it's still there? Strange.

Much in agreement. As I got older and felt things more in the morning, I grew tired of my clothes smelling like smoke and hacking up a lung. I increased how often I went to the bars, as did my friends.

Bar owners were a little worried, but most good bars increased business. I think Keno parlors and inside casinons are about the only place you can still smoke.

... I disagree with banning smoking:
Don't like it? Don't go there! Leave me out of your life choices.

By allowing smoking in a public place (a bar is a public place, as much as a grocery store, pharmacy, shopping mall, etc...), they're effectively inflicting their "life choices" on everyone else. And that "life choice" is a proven carcinogen.

If smokers could get their fix without putting the stuff in their immediate surrounding atmosphere, that would be ideal, however that is not currently the case. That's why I think the trend is leaning on the side of the healthier choice.

Plus, we all want to be bass playing geezers into a nice ripe old age! :D

That's why I think the trend is leaning on the side of the healthier choice.

The trend is simply a result of the fact that most people don't smoke, so they passed a law in their favor. Basic math.

That's democracy for ya!! :hmm:

Personally, I believe in freedom and liberty. A person should have the freedom and liberty to smoke in a place such as a bar. I, and you, have the freedom and liberty to patronize another business that has decided to take your advice and ban smoking of their own Freedom, since that attracts so many more customers in your opinion. Or, we can choose to endure the smoke, or stay home.

Why does everyone have to be like you? (Remember, I'm a non-smoker.)

What if I liked chewing tobacco and wanted to spit it on other people? If you don't like it, get out of MY way.

A professor told me that the basis of rights is that the right to extend my fist, ends before your nose. ;)

FWIW, isn't political mumbojumbo like this prohibited by the TB Mods? (hint hint) Not sure if that makes them ultraconservatives in your mind. I say this in jest because this is the fine print we agree to on TB. ;) Just a thought.

I had to laugh at some of the posts here... You can clearly see that some people here smoke, and will rationalize any way possible to justify supporting their own interests. Like we have not heard it all before... Oh veterans smoke and they...so we should allow...and I have the god given right to...blah, blah, blah.

I really do not care if you smoke or not, but don't try to BS the rest of us. Grow a set, man up, and say that you support smoking gigs, because you are a smoker, and this supports what you perceive as your own best interests. Trying to blow smoke up out butts, just destroys any credibility you may have had (pun intended).

As for gigging in a smoke filled venue... CA has banned smoking indoors, even in bars, and many outside gigs allow smoking only in certain areas. The people who complain about their right to smoke never really consider the rights of non smokers. IF they did, such bans would never have been necessary. I do not like laws dictating what we can and cannot do, but I also have issues with smokers deciding that everyone around them should stink.
I worked as a bar bouncer for many years. I have heard all the arguments. If smokers had collectively been more considerate of others, such laws would never have even been dreamed up

What about the private property rights of the bar owner? He owns the place, he pays the taxes. Cigarettes are legal.
Most bars have a sign that reads "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"
Why can't that mean smokers or complaining non smokers?

Once he opens the doors to others he becomes subject to public domain regulations...

No matter how you twist it, smokers are still responsible for these laws. They are the minority trying to force others to support their interests, even when it negatively effects the majority.
Had smokers thought to take their cigarettes outside, and away from others, the laws never would have even been a consideration...
Put the blame where it belongs, not on those who lost patience. The bans are a consequence of action on the part of smokers

Can't smoke anywhere in Illinois. Not a big deal. I guess it's great, once it's gone, it was like it was never there. But walk outside during break...wow. I never smoked, the wife's a ex, and when I come home from practice where two of the five guys do...you want to take a shower.

But boy oh boy...I still really love the smell of pot, in cooked and uncooked form (I'm a ex drunk and SOME modern stuff). Love it when that's in the air when we're playing out.

It's pretty much a non-issue here since there is no smoking in bars, unless they are a private bar.

Would I have preferred them to leave it up to the bar? Yes, but I don't even smoke inside my apartment so it doesn't really affect me.

Though, I do get a good laugh when someone gets bent out of shape when someone is "smoking" an electronic cigarette near them.

In 20 years of smoking, I never heard a single person talk about how much they loved being a smoker or how much joy smoking had brought to their lives. Every single conversation about smoking I ever heard sitting in a bar was "I have GOT to give this up," "yeah, me too."

For the "smoker's rights" crowd, there is one place where you can always smoke: at home. Or maybe on a canoe somewhere.

Nice way of skirting the issue.
No shirt no shoes no service?

Around here a lot of bars tried to be non smoking establishments. They all failed. Not enough people would go to them. Now all the bars are struggling to keep their doors open. My friend installed a 75k air filtration system in his bar to keep people happy and to hopefully increase business. He had the air tested inside on a packed Friday night. It tested better then the air in the parking lot. When the city ban came in to affect they even gave him a waver. When the state passed a ban they would not honer his waver and he was out the money.

There are ways to make everyone happy but some people care more about having their way then being fair and reasonable.

I take it you have never been screwed over by local or state government.

That's a pretty bold statement. Got unbiased proof that this was the precise cause and that allowing smoking would change this? Keep in mind that external economics and the price of a bar drink vs. what you can buy at the store is cheap and the economy isn't always in the best of shape in most locations.

My bar is doing quite well, almost too busy at times.
