My favourites are "definately", which seems to have so many sibling spellings - all incorrect, and "would of". Who in their right minds come up with that spelling? It's "would have" or "would've". "Would of" is so unfathomably silly it defies analysis. It's what a speech recognition application on a computer could come up with if provided with no contextual intelligence. GAH!

I would guess auto-correct software is to blame when "defiantly" is used as "definATely" because of the typed "A". That software can be weird, like when you try to type "crackhead hosebeast" and it changes it to "ex-girlfriend".

It does add a certain je ne sais quois to your conversations. Luckily English the lingua franca of the internet. These days using French phrases runs counter to the zeitgeist so it takes some chutzpah to do it.

I do wish people wouldn't use French phrases in English sentences, it's just so passé... Ooops!

But "definitely" does not have an "a" in it. You still might be correct though about the auto-correct. And I do love your last sentence!

That is one of those rules I can never retain. I think I have unresolved issues involving conflict between the nuns at the Home For The Rude and MAD magazine, the main sources of my early education.
