Reggae Bassists Club!!!!

I just started taking lessons, my teacher toured with chaos so hes defently got the vibe. ive decided after we get past bass 101 (warmups scales all that jazz) were going in to raggae, the lines the tone the controll required i feel is the best place in the wrold for me to start learning how to throw down some serious vibe. anyone got any tips or general advise to a new bassist starting down the road of feelin irie?

playing through a ibanez sr 300fm (pj active bass) strung with d'add xl nicklewound (45-105) and my masssive peavey microbass amp (20 watts SS)

reggae is the reason i started playing bass. ive been playing it for 10 years. im currently not playing in a band but am studying at musicians institute for bass. reggae is the truth its all bout the groove. i play a fender deluxe jazz usually with worn out flats but recently been playing tons of rock so switched back to the rounds. i toured with a fender bassman 400 210+115 killer lows, still got it but now i use a GK 700rbII + glx410. god i love reggae. im always stayin irie.

Hey I'm looking to join the Reggae club!

I've been a longtime Marley and of course Family Man fan. Probably never a time I don't have a Marley CD in my vehicle or boombox during my practice time.

Although I don't play in a reggae band I've recently joined a new blues band and hope to mix in and bring out some island and ska influence in our work. We are called Stone Blues.

My main bass is a Fender P with TI flats.

Glad to "meet" you all. ;)

Reggae is absolutely my music of choice, and while you could say my band has musical a.d.d. and can't stick with any one genre, we do a lot of reggae style stuff.

I play a p-bass which is perfect for reggae, and honestly I don't really have a style, when my band jams on a song, I just play a line and if it works I keep it. Usually it's along the lines of something you'd hear in a Bob Marley or Abyssinians song.

Greetings and blessing Jluckie3 for this wonderful thread. Played with the Soul Defender Posse out of Washington DC for many years and was blessed and fortunate enough to play with many wonderful reggae artists such as the Itals, Peter Broggs, Ras Pidow, and HR. My dub recipe was, and still is, graphite-necked jazz bass with either Bartolinis or EMGs, round-wound strings, and lots and lots of amplification and cabinets. I have been known to bring three SVT cabinets to a small gig. The secret weapon is the DBX sub-harmonic synthesizer. That, and playing gently right next to the fret board. That usually gets the place rumbling and people on the dance floor.

When I'm looking for an island feel I like to crank the volume up, roll the treble off, and pluck the strings a little further up the neck.

Anyway, I always enjoy checking out the reggae dance and dub rigs, especially the old school ones. Anyone have pics of some favorites you would share? (whether they're yours or not)

Much Respect. Looks like I found a home. Just put another band together and we play everything from Toots and the Maytals, Sublime, John Browns Body, Pepper, Slightly Stoopid, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh to Bad Brains.....

I man will start/join a band when I can. Main thing holding me back is money to get a decent rig. Just something to be heard, I can't afford anything now though, so I'm still a bedroom bassist for now.

I have two basses, a Squire P and a Spirit. Both on Labella Flats. I love both, the P is more comfortable (danceable) until I start to notice it's weight, and the Spirit, gotta love how light the thing is, I just tend to be less "loose" when playing it. Plan to use both. I don't think I'll need to get anything else to get the sound I want.

Can't beat a good one drop drummer. Carlton Barrett, Nelson Miller, Style Scott.

Check this out. Maxi Priest - Wild World (live). Wanna learn this song haha. Band is TIGHT. Kinda commercial but bassline is wicked. Maxi covered the hell out this tune.

Respect, nice to meet another C'ville bass player. :)

I don't play in a Reggae band myself, but I'm a longtime fan of the style and the spirit. I'm just starting in a blues band over in Elkton (Stone Blue) that I'm hoping to get some Ska/Reggae/Island music worked into our setlists.
