Reggae & R&B Cab (and debate about palm muting!)

lol, that's the cab I have now. It's just not that good; the lows get extremely muddy to the point you can't tell what the note is. And also; it's SO FREAKING HEAVY.

I'm looking for a cab with definable lows and something that won't break my back.

You don't need any 10's for reggae. 2-15's or 1 -18. Personally, I think four tens is the worst cab for reggae. Also take any casters off and put your cab directly on the floor. If you go the 18" route you can round out your sound a bit with 2 10's, this will help with the R & B sound and also to cut a bit. But 2- 15's sound the bestfor reggae. I have SWR, one Big ben and one Goliath Jr III. Turn off the tweeter if you have one, also.

negative....i play mostly reggae. have been for the past 3 years now. i have a GK neo410. you dont want to turn the tweeter off (granted, you dont want a tone of highs, but you need definition in your sound). the sound where you're standing is not the same sound the audience hears. most of the tone you need comes from your fingers and hands. if you get a 15 or 18 (eww) it would work, but if you play other styles of music, it may be a little too fat and lack definition.

good reggae tone=good technique (i.e.-palm mute, articulation)

I think they pretty reasonable. I'm thinking in the $600 range, but don't quote me.

I'd send a message to Kjung from that thread I linked, who could give you an idea. Or ask LDS directly, sending them the link to the cabinet I'm suggesting.

Otherwise, if you're at all woodworking-competent, build your own. Plans are available for free. From what I hear, the fEarful 15/6 from Greenboy (a talkbasser) is excellent. There's three monster threads on the fEarful cabinets. They can be built for less than $500 each.

The 4Ω UL410 seems to show up regularly in the classifieds here for around $700 USD.

You might also consider the Epifunky 410, which at $500 USD new, seems like a steal. From the reviews I've read here, it might be quite similar to the depth of the UL410, and weighs in under 60 lbs.

Guys; I'm looking to spend *under* $600 on the cab. My need for a new head knocks out a lot of my budget. I think I'm good to go with a Markbass head, it's just the cab (for under $600) that I need to find. I'm also open to used gear. Feel free to link me to eBay auctions, whatever. Just find me a rig that'll fit what I need to do perfectly.

I took a look at the Epifunky 410. I also emailed LDS, I'm awaiting a response for the quote.

I will admit that it is heavy, I bought a $25 dolly from Home Depot just to move the thing around. But maybe it is your amp settings or maybe the speakers are tired, or maybe I don't know any better, but it sounds fantastic w. my GK.

Yeah, I powerdrilled four little wheels onto the bottom, but it's still a pain to lift in and out of the car for gigs.

With my Hartke head, it's really just a 'meh'. I think it's probably the head, but considering there's a family of spiders living it there, I think it'd be nice to upgrade the cab either way.

$900 USD will get you a lot if you're patient with used gear. If you want new, right now, then obviously your options are a little more limited.

If you're willing to buy the cab blind, this dealer seems to have the Epifunky in stock.

Again, I'm saying I've been playing reggae as my main gig for a long time...I've had the great fortune to see many reggae shows, play many and spend time with a variety of artists and bands.

I know what you're talking about, and while it may net you 'a dublike sound', it's not commonly used by reggae musicians. I have a feeling that some of the confusion comes from a type of right hand technique where your plucking fingers mute the strings along with your fretting hand, but it's not a palm mute.

Thanks for the playing tips though. ;)
