Regretting selling my Squier Matt Freeman P

Hey All,

I sold my Matt Freeman P a while back, and regret it quite a bit. Cannot find a used one for sale anywhere.

What bass do you regret selling?

PS - Any Australian based TBers want to sell me theirs?

If you have a ute or a falcon, you don't need that bass, you're at least 3/4 as cool as freeman himself.

I miss all of my basses, even the neck heavy ones and the heavy ones. Though it was the least useful and least comfortable, I think I miss the Corvette the most.

I don't regret selling a single bass because I've never sold or traded any.

I had a really nice Fender CIJ P-bass, natural with rosewood fingerboard and black pickguard. It was really amazing. I sold it because I had hurt hy hand and couldn't play anything but shortscale basses for almost 2 years.

Just recently I also had a Yamaha BB414 strung with GHS flats. I sold it because I had just bought a MIA Fender P that I thought was so much better than the Yamaha. I wasn't wrong, but I still miss the Yamaha much. It was a real thump machine and would have complimented the Fender nicely as a backup.

The Matt Freeman’s are a bit rare here in Australia.
I’ve got one as well as a couple of mij Fenders, and the Matt Freeman’s built better.
Have you tried an ad on Ozbass to see if there are any available?

Those Classic Vibe Series basses are ridiculously good basses. Absolute steals on the used market, though prices are slowly keeeping up. I’ve bought and sold 4. Always selling for something more expensive only to regret it and come running back to find another one . I’m on my 5th Squier CV 60’s P. Had this one for over a year and I’m not letting it go . It sounds , feels, plays, and looks just right.
The necks and pickups on these are key features , unique to each particular model.
Hope you can find another Matt Freeman.

Might want to try a CV70’s P. Those are like the MF but have black blocks and binding . Pickups are the same or very close IIRC.

I started on a mid-70s P basses back in 79. Dozens of basses and thousands of dollars later I circled all the way back around to a pair of 70s P basses. I could argue all those others contributed to musical growth over time. But I can't help wondering, "What if I had just stuck with that first bass?"

You should find another one but not MF pbass, the used sonic blue or fiesta red CV60p which have better comfort neck profile.

none.* i keep what i like. i get rid of what i don't like. i have learned the difference.


* if i had known that i would one day be a member of a place called talkbass = i might have hung on to some of those instruments just to "score real big" and to impress the TB folks! but in the early days: sell-one-get-another-one was the plan.

While I do agree with you on the neck profile, the OP might have larger hands and/or prefer the fuller MF neck profile. OP might also like the color options of the MF better.Then theres the differences in the pickups. The MF is voiced differently. a brighter, more aggressive tone. More clarity. Less thump and warmth. Again, both great basses with great pickups and necks. But different vibes all together. 60's vs 70's. Depends on what one is looking for.

I've never regretted selling any of my basses. I've only ever sold ones that I was sort of on the fence about buying anyway.

I did have a guitar stolen from me that I'll always miss though. They're quite difficult to find as well...

Bought mine used and mint $210 with gig bag. (thank you, Craigslist). One of my favorites. a keeper. How do the current Squier Classic Vibe 70's P. now available compare to the MF? Or how does it perform in general?

It seems to be a pretty standard P bass, in that you could obtain a used P of the right colour, put a higher mass bridge on it, and appropriate pickups, and it would be the same. I'd look to that route to getting you a good PB that has the same characteristics.

I didn't think Tokai had a hand in the JV Squier series.

Not a bass, but I used to have a tort on seafoam Jaguar that I just couldn't get a sound I liked out of. I sold it in the morning and had sellers remorse by the afternoon. I still think about that thing almost 20 years later...
