Regular Coke?

I just accidentally got a small regular Coke along with my lunch order (with the large Diet).

When did regular Coke become so ? One sip - OMG it's terrible! I'm normally a Diet Pepsi kinda guy, if anything other than water, and will take Diet Coke if that's all they have, and I haven't had a regular Coke in years and years. Was it always this bad? YUCK!

Coke in Mexico tastes really good because I guess they still use real sugar to make it.
In the USA all pop now just tastes weird. Undrinkable.

I got a 2 liter bottle of regular Coca Cola and drank some of it this week. I thought it had an unusual flavor and not like it used to taste. I also had some regular RC Cola, Pepsi Cola, and Faygo Cola in the past few weeks. They all tasted better than Coke and had a more of a cola flavor. If available, I prefer RC Cola the most.

This. It's exceedingly rare that I drink soda, but if I do it's a Mexican Coke or Jarritos.

All major brand soda tastes off to me these days compared to what I grew up with. "Back in the day" in SC we used to stop on the way home after school at a real live general store - wooden floors and all - and grab cokes* from a horizontal reach-in cooler and walk them over to the owner at the register to buy while we handed over our returnable/empty bottle from the last time. We mostly bought RC Cola because not only did it taste good but it came in 16 oz bottles for the same price as Coke/Pepsi 12 oz.

These days I don't drink soda all that much anyway and when I do it's more likely to be *diet*. I used to despise this stuff due to that overwhelming, cloying aftertaste but they seem to be able to make it pretty good these days - I actually *like* the Sprite Zero. Diet colas still don't fare as well in the taste department, IMO, and when I want a real Coke I just buy the Mexican cane sugar stuff (easy to score around here and a staple at any Mexican restaurant).

When/where I grew up "coke" was a generic term for any soda and not specific to being either a cola or a Coca-Cola.

Real cane sugar, specifically. And yep, it tastes completely different from USA-bottled Coke, which uses high fructose corn syrup instead.

But tbh, if I'm going to drink any kinda of cola, it's gonna be Coke, either Mexican or US, because Pepsi, RC, Tab, Shasta, etc. taste even worse.

If you got it from a fountain at a fast food place, there is a very good chance the mix was out of whack.

Yeah, HFCS vs. cane sugar I get, but I'm not sure that's the main taste difference I'm experiencing - had a weird "foreign" fruity flavor, almost though it was a badly mixed Cherry Coke or something at first. Couldn't do it, poured it down the drain. blech

Pineapple Jarritos ftw. Last time I had a coke it tasted thick. Too syrupy. Never been a coke/Pepsi fan though.

Until I read that, I thought I was the only one who felt that way LOL.

Used to drink Coke when I was young and I remember it as just fine. Have bought Coke over later years for rum and cokes, but noticed the straight Coke didn't seem right (but fine with rum...). Just figured my tastes had changed over the decades.

Side story: Back when I was a teen, and Coke was my 'soda-du-jour', we moved to Saudi Arabia for 4 years (Dad's work). No Coke to be had (religious Muslim/Jewish thing), but they had Kaki Cola. Similar in taste to US Coke and tasty. Parents would buy that, and 7-UP, in bottles by the case. Here's the bi-lingual bottle that brings back memories.:

Anyway, glad to know it wasn't just me who noticed the difference between Coke then and now in the US. Only took many decades to find out LOL. Now I gotta find some Mexican Coke to try.

Nowadays, it's Sprite Zero for wife and I.

Edit: I was in Saudi in the early 70's. Just looked it up and in 1988, things changed and there is a bottling company of Coca-Cola in Saudi now. Yay progress! LOL.

It was likely a bad mix from the fountain. It happens all too often. The are restaurants I won’t go to because their mix is repeatedly bad.

McDonald’s use to be very exacting of their Coke mix and had the syrup delivered in stainless steel vessels. Not so much anymore.

Definitely regular Coke. Diet Coke is disgusting and gives me a headache.

Personally, I would say it is a raspberry flavor.

I used to be a Diet Coke drinker, but I think Coke Zero and now Coke Zero Sugar are much better.
