Get a hold of the bass chart to Nice 'N Juicy by Maynard Ferguson. A few measures with notes, then a few measures with chords listed, then a few pages with the word "Jam" written on it.

"rehearsal band" is exactly what got me back inot playing after ~10years off. retire-y at church wanted to jazz guitar so he started the group. player skill and experience varied considerably but it was a blast...and i think jazz is the best platform from which to learn music

Me too. I have given up playing in blues and rock bar bands and have started working on improving my sight reading ability (at age 62!). I will be looking to hook up with a reheresal, fun band doing jazz and big band tunes.
