RELATIONSHIPS SUCK

I would guess that this chick is about your age.

.

Does it make me weird if I say I'd already seen that picture like 3 years ago?....

Sounds like you're with somebody who's immature and has some growing up to do.

Some people don't grow up ; they just grow older.

It's a losing battle. My guess is that she's either not ready to realize that you don't need to drink to have fun or that she'll never change and you both need to find somebody who's a better match from that perspective.

Am I right? After almost two years, my girlfriend decides that she wants to be able to go out and have fun and not be tied down. Do I steer into it and tell her that she's right? I know that if I try to talk her out of it, that won't have a good ending.

She's the kind of girl that will complain that we don't go out to the bar enough to have fun and socialize. When we're out if I have a drink, she's mad that I don't have another one. She's also the one that brings her alcoholic friend out to the bar..

I don't understand girls. Guess it's time to start dating women. :smug:

It just sounds like the two of you are at different places in your life. Theres nothing wrong with that.
At moments like this, its probably best to split up and move on.

I just don't understand how they love you one week, and not the next. :o

When people are young theyre still seeking to find out who they are.
At times like this, its not uncommon for people who are involved to grow apart.

At this age, everyone should just want to go out, have fun, and not be too serious with things. You have your whole life in front of you, so there's no reason not to have fun while you can :)

Well, thats not right either. Not everyone at your age wants to be just like you. :smug:

I know what you're saying. I did try to do that stuff with her, but it never seems to be enough. If we do it once a week, she wants to do it twice a week. One drink, she wants me to have two.

Definitely not going to fight for the relationship and try to change her feelings, I did that with my first major one and that was a MESSY breakup.

Sounds to me like she wants you to be something that youre not.

Your relationship may suck, but in my experience they don't suck overall.

-Mike

Mine as well.

Yeah! Crazy.

The love/no love thing gets even weirder. Last night she said she loved me, but today she said that was because she thought I'd get mad if she didn't say it.

To be honest, you can love someone and still know that youre not right together.

I've actually found relationships to get relatively easier. There's a lot less BS most of the time, IME.

I have as well. Though, I think the relative ease comes from having gained some experience.

Pro-tip: if your relationship sucks, you're with the wrong partner or you're doing something wrong.

+1

I don't think you should get stuck on staying with one girl for one length of time; I think you should just think of it as one period of time with one person to another. You'll be happier thinking it doesn't have to last. Or at least that's my mind.

Surprisingly, I agree with you. Enjoy the time and length that the relationship lasts, but keep in mind that nothing is permanent. Things come to end, chapters close, and new ones begin.

Personally I found it easier just to start fresh than to try and make one thing into another thing.

Same here. In the past I had female friends who I might have grown a crush for or whatever. I found those were not the best women to pursue. Ive even been validated 10+ years later in finding out that I actually could have had a chance with them back then. However, I feel that its better I didnt go that route, as now theyre still my friends, and had we gotten involved we likely wouldnt be.
I take the start fresh approach as well. I prefer to meet someone new, find mutual attraction (physically, and then elsewhere) and go after them.

I was once in a relationship with a girl who didn't know what she wanted. She'd talk about growing and then sit on her bum. I brought it up and she'd get all hissy.

After a while she wondered why I don't drink much and talked to me about it.

So I went to a party of hers, drank me *** off, and passed out (cuz that's the kind of drinker I was and that's what happens when I drink) that was the clear message we weren't compatible anymore and hence, we split. The end.

Ya think..

It's official: I just met her tonight for the last time. She said the reason she is ending it is because she kissed a guy at the bar last night, and that she can't promise it won't happen again. She suggested a break, so she could get it out of her system, I said no. Her mom and others even thought she should hide it from me. I only got it out by prying and then she started sobbing saying how she's so sorry she hurt me. That hurts a little more than a breakup!

Slip out the back Jack..
Make a new plan Stan..
No need to be coy Roy...
Just listen to me..
Hop on the bus Gus...
No need to discuss much..
Just drop off the key Lee..
..and get yourself free..

Look man.. the bottom line is this.. it hurts.. get over it. If you are the kind of guy who wants a relationship.. as opposed to a quick piece of tail.. then take the time to hang out and get to know who you are dealing with before you cloud the issue with sex.. If all you want is a quick hit and run then in these times the world is your oyster .. but you will have to deal with the consequences..

Definitely - not interested in a hit and run, even though everyone says I should be at my age.

I think what they're trying to say is you never know just how you can score in boner bowling until you try.

LOL

Either that, or go into relationships expecting that you two will probably get tired of each other in a couple of weeks and move on. "Dating" is what I believe they call it - when you're with someone, but it's only tentative.

Hey, CBNJ; I think what most people in this thread are trying to say is, "You're too young to be looking for your soul mate," or something along those lines. I'm not sure how that presumed intention of yours got in their heads, but I think that's what they mean. That, and most of TB are pretty much man-whores. Beware of Eric Perry - watch out boy, he'll chew you up. :D

I was 19-years-old and my girlfriend took off for two months during the summer. I pretty much kept away from other girls at that time. In August I went to a party next door and my friends set me up. I find myself alone in the aparment sitting on the couch with a cute girl. They even had "Love the One You're With" by Costly, Pills and Hash on the record player. (yes we had records back then :p) Guess who walks in the door at the very moment. Right! my girlfriend. Turns out she had been having her own fun all summer. Oh, well it was probably a good thing, we broke up and I had no more reason to stay in L.A. so I left. The break up was a mutual agreement and we stayed friends for many years.

I've generally dated older guys and I've actually come to realize that I dislike the role it puts me in..I kinda feel like a kid and it's awkward...but beyond that, I honestly just don't think I'm in the right place in MY life, for your average guy in his mid-40's to relate to me. I'm not mature enough and it just creates a dynamic that I'm starting to question. So, relationships suck...but remember that the relationship you have with yourself is always the most important. If you don't feel grounded and secure when you're by yourself, no one else is gonna get you there. Society sets us up to "need" partners. I say, I don't ever want to be reliant on a guy to complete my life. Soul mates can be friends or mentors. Friends and family are important too. I wish we lived in a world that wasn't so focused on pairing everybody up.

To the OP, I had a similar experience at your age (I'm 40 now). There's much more to come. I met my soul mate when I was 32. Got married at 36. Don't sweat it bro, shake the dust of this relationship off and move on.

The girl I was in a relationship with at your age was a party girl too, and she was 19. Couldn't see it at the time (thought I was losing the love of my life), but that relationship ending was the best thing that could have happened. Time and maturity will lead you to "the one".

Don't choose the one you can live with. Choose the one you can't live without.

Wow, great post. It sounds to me that you are more mature than some 40-year-olds

Thanks..well, I think it's also a generation gap thing. I mean, I literally grew up with computers. I learned to type on the original Macintosh. I watched my mom use one of the first versions of Photoshop. The first time I went on the Internet, I was 14 and it was like this huge historical moment to me. I grew up with video games and skateboarding and the first snowboards and body piercing and tattoos going more mainstream....honestly, a lot of things that shaped my identity and my life now, yet would've been entirely different experiences for someone in their 40's. I mean, I love 80s music and fashion, but it's surreal to try and have a conversation about it when back in 1989, I was 7 and the guy I'm dating was in college or older.

For some reason right now, I'm finally starting to kinda see my life experiences as all being so relevant to who I am and what I do now, instead of just this string of events which happened to me. If I'm dating a guy who can't grasp that just like how I can't grasp the 70s because I wasn't there, it suddenly just feels sort of empty to me.

I don't think people think enough about who the "right" partner really is for them. And even if you are only out for sex, to a degree, things almost become more critical, because there is a greater chance of miscommunication.

I take this stuff seriously now because back when I didn't, I got hurt a lot and wasted my time and energy on things that don't matter. I say, have fun when you want to, but just remember that it doesn't absolve you from "the rules."

Thanks to all you TB family, you really helped. I'm feeling better, just different not having someone to hang with - but friends and family have been keeping me busy - it seems like the cheating part makes them feel bad! :p

Ex and her mom both told me they still want to go to the brothers wedding in April. I really liked the brother and his fiancé, and really liked her family, but I don't want to see my ex.
