Reliability and Tube vs. Solid State

It's true. BUT, I think I've found a solution!

I think we should COMBINE the technologies into what I would hereby like to call a "hybrid" amp. Think about it. A unification of both Tube and Solid State technologies! I think it will revolutionize the amplifier industry. WHY? Because at any given time, sure, the tube section could fail, like every 3 months or so, sure...but only half the amp would be broken.

I think you are on to somthing here. But what about the SOUND.....??? Surley there are those who say power tubes have a SOUND all to themselves...or is it the preamp tubes make all the difference.......????

Im waiting for an SS pre with a tube power section :p

I have come across a great solution myself, as tube amps are hellishly unreliable, i shall take a SS amp to each gig as a backup!

This "Mesa sell tubes" attitude, so they inflate thier numbers when you should change tubes is ridicoulis.

So, every manufacturer that reccomends that their product be replaced at a certain time of use is lying to sell more product???

This argument is weak and insulting to the companies, as well as people who use common sense.

I dunno, I'll bet you have a bottle of shampoo in your house that says "wash, rinse, repeat".... Do you think the shampoo is sub-standard? Does the shampoo company think you can't get it right the first time? maybe they're trying to get you to use twice as much...

Good to see that nothing has really changed in the 8 hours I was at work...

I wish people would quit quoting what is basically 'ad copy' as proof for things (both Ampeg and Mesa). It's nice that Mesa will tell you that you've bought the best amp in the world when you buy their solid state amp, but they'll tell you the same thing when you buy their tube amps too. In fact, what do you expect them to tell you when you've just dropped over 1K on an amp? Tough luck, the amp you just bought is ok but not the best?

I play a 400+, and I'm also the first to say that they're AWFULLY free with their statement of fact. In fact, in past posts I've blamed them of outright lying about their specs, their tubes, etc. I find it endlessly frustrating that a company that can produce such wonderful and great sounding amps can undercut their own reputation with their literature. But at least they do it with all their amps...SS & tube.

It's funny that when I asked for proof I was blamed for saying 'gibberish' while those same people are now demanding the same proof that would establish some kind of REAL evidence.

It's also funny that some have assumed that tube amps = distortion. It's an uninformed stance that has no basis in reality. People buy tube amps for clean as well as distortion. I personally wouldn't ever think of using distortion, but have a tube amp in regular use. I like clean and loud and warm. That's what a tube amp can provide. People are certainly not buying the new Sadowsky tube amp for the distortion, nor is distortion an intrinsic part of the tube sound.

Tonight I'll go to rehersal and play my ol' hybrid amp...and it will sound great. Friday and Saturday I'll be out playing shows with my tube amp and it will sound great as well. Neither will take any special amount of care to do what they're supposed to do.

My $.02 on tube emulation:
I use a Mesa 400+, I also use a Boss GT-6B which has amp emulation. The emulation is crap. I use my -6B only for the FX. However, emulations CAN be used. For instance, I can get a superior distortion when using an amp model coupled with FX than without. So, in the sense of being an effect, modeling sounds decent; in driving a poweramp it sounds terrible. Also, in reffering to the maintainance of SS amps, the reason that transistors aren't in sockets is that the replacment transistors would already cost as much as a new amp. Once a SS amp is dead, unless you can get some parts for dirt cheap, or it is no longer being made, its best to bury it.

One of my favorite tube emulation stories concerns the Sansamp BDDI, which anyone who doesn't have a tube amp will tell you sounds just like a tube amp. Only better.

My bro plays bass too, He uses a 400+ (which I have owned as well, we swap gear all the time). Nowadays he pretty much has just one tone he uses all the time, but back in the day he wanted a sterile, artificial solid state "scooped" sound for a few songs. This is a problem if you use a 400+. What did he do? SANSAMP. Just about killed the tubiness of the 400+ when it was on, then it was back to normal when off. I always hated it when he used it, but it was the tone he wanted.

Yes, and I have very clean hair. While we are at it...only take one aspirin...gel caps instead of normal...gets in you system faster...

Yes, but they also wear off more rapidly forcing you to take more of them long run. I suppose it doesn't matter if you get the desired pain relief, but is a great thing from a marketing viewpoint.

Do I get some sort of reward for the most completely off topic post in this thread? :D
