Relocating My Baby

I am moving from San Diego to Boston and am traveling via airplane. I was considering taking my "practice" bass, but don't know how long it will be until I move back, so I don't want to leave my baby at home. Does anyone know if I need to have a special case for travel or will a simple road runner case do me justice?

PS If I do need a specialized case, can you recommend one?

I would look at ATA style case i know gator makes one maybe tkl too

I'd ship it to myself (FedEx/UPS). Much safer. You can buy the insurance to cover it, but on the airlines no insurance at all, and risk it disappears or gets damaged.

This. Took an instrument with TSA approved locks on airplane travel and the TSA destroyed the case.* The guitar was not damaged but, that was enough for me. With all the TSA larceny stories in the papers, ship it. It seems so much less risky.

*it was a guitar I had gigged with for over 10 years Still in very good condition and the case still smelled new like the day I bought it. So I lost original equipment, and the case was no longer made by Ibanez, I had to settle for another style hsc. Yeah the airline compensated me but, I still lost. Never again!

Or ship it to one of us out here and come pick it up when you get here. I am sure we can find you a Mass based bassist to hold it for you. You may have to pry out of their dead hands to get it back, depending on what bass it is.

I frequently fly with a bass. Throw it in a hard case and carry it on. They fit in the overhead, and you can usually put it in the attendants' closet. I've never had a problem carrying one on.
