I know, right?
I'll just stop at saying that none of my barbs around this subject are aimed at Edinburgh.
Such a beatiful city, BTW. Looking forward to another visit when that becomes feasible again.
...yeah. I'm going to avoid saying anything directly political here, but trust me, I've been following.by the way, if you had followed the 'negotiations' between the UK's government and the EU after it was decided to leave... suddenly it would all made sense, as a lot of the headlines seem to translate as "we want out, but having much of what we had when we were in"![]()
It would be funny if it weren't real...
Dude, I just moved down here from Amsterdam. You really think I'm going to move somewhere with even worse weather?!I'm not even British, but the UK (and Edinburgh in particular) has been the place I call home for many years now. I'm actually from Madrid... trade places?I miss Madrid! Edinburgh, and Scotland in general, is beautiful and I love it here, but the weather gets annoying.

Most of them, that I know, did it for tax purposes. They started with just work visas, and kept working here. The US welcomed that.
Once they reached a certain income level, they were being charged huge taxes, in Britain.
One well known guitarist I know, was going to have to pay 90% of his income in taxes.
A well know singer I know, was put into a 78% tax bracket.
That’s the quickest way to drive off talent.
I know a Finnish musician who made the mistake of appearing on a very high profile tv show, before his visa was secured, and was told he had to leave the country. It’s been years and he’s never been able to get a visa.
' fraid it's a little too late for me.be adopted as a Ukrainian orphan
MoneyNo, not me, I am just curious about this. For most mere mortals such a thing is difficult, but a lot of British musicians seem to have just upped and moved to the USA over the last 50 years. How do they get to just move and stay, seemingly on a whim?
Yes, this!My biggest piece of advice would be to get yourself an immigration lawyer if you don’t already have one. There may be more options available to you than you think.
Good to hear countries other than Canada are also messed up. I have no problem with 60km or 5/32" (actually I always do actions in 64s so I would mentally convert to 10/64").If someone said something was 60km away I would have to think about it. If someone says their bass action is 5/32" I have to convert it to mm to understand it.

'Scuse me, I just spotted three skinks chasing each other beside the pool. Gotta grab the camera...
Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer.
I emigrated from the UK to the US, happy to answer questions over DM. My biggest piece of advice would be to get yourself an immigration lawyer if you don’t already have one. There may be more options available to you than you think.
To get permanent residence, unfortunately, is going to be a slog.
Here’s a flow chat me and some friends used to keep track of where we were in the process:

Be wary of the bits where you have to wait. Recently waiting times are being measured in years!
I don't honestly know how that works or who recognizes what. I'm actually very curious... always have been. Must one own some form of property in the United Kingdom to be a Subject of Her Majesty, and also pay taxes on property held in the United States?
Suppose for a minute I wanted to re-immigrate to Huncote, there in Leicester, whence my peeps came here from about 400 years ago... would I also be considered a British Subject? Or simply an American immigrant? I've always wanted to visit. Who knows, maybe I could stay for a while.
interesting stuff, didn’t know that.
Although it’s my personal view that it was the hardships of WW2 itself that resulted in the “sick man of Europe” status! The nation was pretty much on its knees at that point.
I think the UK only finished paying back its massive loan from the US in the 21st century (IIRC).
The UK also disdains the ridiculous metric system.
Yes, the whole world is watching and hoping the USA makes a full recovery.Oh, it's just a SPLENDID time to be in the States right now. You'll LOVE it.
