Remarkable discovery on US Geddy Jazz bass

I had an extra black jazz pickguard, so for variation, I decided to swap it out on my Geddy US Jazz - to make an all black bass for no good reason other than to change things up. I removed the beautiful pearloid white guard on the U.S. Geddy and what did I find? No routing or CNC hole!!!

I'm keeping the guard off. Why the heck not?

I haven't seen an American Fender WITHOUT the route and/or hole in years. My 93 jazz had an ugly route under the pg, my 2008 and 2014 am standard P's have the CNC hole and the 2003 am standard Jazz I'm selling has the route and the hole.

My current MIJ Geddy is the same way, looks great with or without the pickguard. I never played a MIA Geddy but bet they sound awesome!

Yup, none of the American reissue basses have the CNC hole. I bet these US Geddy's probably use the same bodies as the AVRI '74s.

Search ebay for 'Fender Jazz Bass body' and you will get a good idea of which has or hasn't the route and/or the hole(s)...
Squiers, MIAs, MIMs, MIJs, etc...
Though there might be variations depending on the manufacturing year on a few models...

It's a beautiful thing. As far as I know, that bass and the American Special (not the standard which costs hundreds of dollars more) are the only current American Fenders that can go pickguardless.

One thing that I noticed on your first picture, and also on my GL USA, is how easy this USA paint job scratches compared to both of my CIJ models. I could even see a bit of swirl marks on it when it was brand new out of the factory box.

Great job on getting it all polished up. What did you use?

I noticed that too. In fact, last night after doing this I went on line to see if it was actually a Nitro finish (it's not). I gigged it once and practiced with it two or three times and it has swirls, minor scratches, etc. Nothing major at all (through the paint, dimples, etc), but still visible use. So, needless to say, it is no longer in collector mode but will become a regular instrument at gigs.

As for cleaning, I just used Fender guitar spray polish and a fine cleaning cloth that came with my American Design Experience bass.

I always wondered why the Japanese Geddys didn't have a CNC hole. So now I know that Fender can do it if they want to. I'll bet that American Geddy is a great bass.
