Remastered Band on the Run

McCartney's remastered and repackaged band on The Run will be available Nov. 1. You can pre-order now and download two live tracks by Wings in 1979 -- "BOTR" And "No Words for My Love." The bass sound on the live BOTR is phenomenal and he does some great melodic noodling on the other -- I can't understand why Paul gave up the Rick. His voice is great, too.

There will be additional tracks plus the nine original tracks on the re-mastered sets.

Paul gave up the Rick -- at least in the studio -- when Back to the Egg came out and he was using a Yamaha. These new live recordings -- at least the first two -- are from sometime in 1979. When I saw him in 1992, he was using a Wal five string and the Hofner, and he has said that he gave the Wal up because it was too heavy. Elvis Costello convinced him to get out the Hofner again in the late '80s and Paul had the neck reset by Mandolin Bros. so it would play in tune. Paul has said people expect to see the Hofner, and I have to admit that when he holds it up above his head in concert now, people give the bass an ovation. The Hofner sounds good on his live recordings, but the Rick sounds amazing in this remastered live stuff.

As mentioned, he was playing a Yamaha in those live clips. If you're familiar with Google and the term "Last Flight" you might be able to find that concert in its entirety. Not exactly an official release if you know what I mean.

He played a Jazz Bass for much of the Band On The Run album.

It occurred tio me that it might be the Yamaha. Sure sounds great, whatever it is.

Since Paul is now in his 60's, I wonder if it has to do with the weight of the bass (a 9+ pound Ric compared to a 5 pound Hofner).

I'm just speculating on that, of course, but I am 54 and I have found myself avoiding basses that weigh anything over 9.5 pounds. I am just not as strong as I used to be.

I'm speculating that it may have something to do with the fact that of the 10 billion people who love Paul McCartney, only about less than 0.001%, a portion of which are TB'ers, really notice or mind the subtle differences in the sound of his bass ! And he obviously is OK with it.
