EBS uses a very robust (and good looking) felt for their ProLine and NeoLine models. These cabs are VERY good from s logistics POV, and hard wearing, too! Big, recessed handles, recessed metal grille, steel back plate, stacking corners and so on, but still gentle to car interiors etc. And I think the ProLine looks fantastic.

I don't care about what anyone says, my cats really LOVED mine.
I remember seeing them trashing it with their little claws while looking at me with this "F U man!" attitude cat love to have.

Nauga were nearly hunted to extinction in the 60's and 70's. You hardly see them anymore.
All my cabs have it, since I scrounge vintage Bag End gear. Dust and smoke and wear were the worst issues, but my cabs and our PA gear do fine.
But I think the OP may be forgetting how thin and brittle old tolex was. Old

I never understood the stuff, really. And heaven knows I've had plenty of it, but almost none now, just one SWR cab in a practice space.

I hate those Kustom cabinets with a passion. In college my guitar player had one and me being the only one with a drivers license I always had the honour to help carry the thing up to his appartement after a gig. The handles on those cabinets where absolutely terrible.
oooh, yes. I believe I literally used my hair clippers to remove the cats damage when I sold mine some years ago.

Sounds like the bigger issue here is that you all have cats. Your mistake, not the cabinet's. I find it hard to reconcile complaints of eventual smells coming off speaker cabinets with people who live with litter boxes in their homes.

Lots of pre-line array JBL Pro boxes (4732a), as well as the massive Servodrive SDL subs were covered with the dark gray good stuff, very durable! My only complaint was after outdoor show season we'd need to clean it with automotive carpet cleaning products. I can't imagine what would have happened to Tolex on those boxes.
My Turbosound TMS, TSE, and TSW boxes were painted. We'd color in the scratches with Sharpies in between frequent repaints. At least the design made them easy to paint with a roller.
The Line-a-bed, Line X products might be the best thing to come along in a while.

I wonder if this would be true had he not died? Larry Hartke built him a prototype 8x10 out of an old Ampeg cab and Jaco loved it. I think the endorsement was a done deal at that point, but then... fate.
Jaco might have been rocking a rat fur covered signature Hartke fridge.
My Berg NV610 has the fur. It's the best material I've ever had on a cab -- tough as nails. No rips or tears after multiple years and hundreds of gigs. I can't say that about any tolex-covered cab that I've ever owned. Perhaps those that don't like it have only experienced poor quality rat fur?

I don't have anything to really back this up, but I think when Jeff Genzler and I were working together, we were the first to come up with the "bed liner" stuff on cabinets. Our product was heavily "rat furred" up until that time. We actually tried to think through actually applying bed liner spray. Jeff later sourced out a covering that approximated that material. It first went on our Uber cabs.
The worst thing is when a player who is a smoker keeps his rat fur cab in his damp basement and his cat pees on it.
I used to come home from gigs when smoking indoors was still allowed and my wife would forbid me from bringing my rat fur cabs past the garage. I had to leave my clothes in the garage as well.

Traded rat fur for tolex on my GS112 cabinet. Looks much better.

My SWR cabs all had carpet covering and they stood up to years upon years of touring and general abuse. Every cab I've had with Tolex ripped and was hanging off within a few gigs. For my money I prefer the carpet and so do my cats. If I ever rebuild one though it will get truck bed liner for a covering.
Not sure how true this is. I have an Epifani UL410 and an Avatar 112 that are both 5 years old or newer and both have rat fur. I'm not a huge fan, but other than possibly holding odors (smoke etc.), they still look great. Not a really a fan of the rat fur, but it has held up better than the tolex cabs I had in the past.
I never had an issue with rat fur. I took care of my 2 combos (Yorkie, Trace) that had it - not OCD took care of, but common sense. Hit them with the vacuum when cleaning the apartment. Always looked good. I liked it. Maybe I'm just weird.
That said, now, not gigging, my rig is carefully restored pretty living room furniture with nice Tolex from Mojo. I guard it and the kids know no monkey business near dad's bass gear.
If I was gigging, I have no idea what I'd prefer, but I can't imagine liking the stuff in my truck bed being on my rig. Again, maybe I'm just weird.

Got cats?...Put a cover over the cab......I used an old curtain for years...leaving the speakers visible...for home practicestill using my hartke xl 4x10"... I would share a picture but it actually doesn't look bad at all since 91' when i bought it..and never needed a new cabinet. I've had dozens of cats since then, but only a few were obliged to leave their claw nails embedded into the fur on the front edges.
