I started a homemade EUB project about 10 years ago. I recently dug it out and decided to try to get it finished.
For the body I am using black walnut from a tree that used to stand at my Grandpa's house. For the neck, am not comfortable carving the radius, so I purchased an Engelhardt neck about 10 years ago from Bob G.
The neck is like this one:
Invalid Link Removed
While the neck was in storage, one of the volutes got damaged. I popped it off last night thinking I would just get a replacement to glue on, but I kind of liked the look, so I popped the other one off as well.
After I did that, I started wondering wondering if I should cut the scroll off to make the whole thing shorter for portability, since that is kind of the point of the project for me. I understand with a double bass, this could drastically alter the sound, and I wouldn't dream of doing this on my double bass.
Since this is more or less a solid body EUB, I am not greatly concerned with duplicating the look of an upright bass. I am wondering if it would greatly affect the sound/tone on a solid body instrument like this? I see a mixed bag of EUBs out there that have scrolls and don't have them, but the ones that don't have more of a bass guitar style neck and not a traditional double bass pegbox.
I was thinking it would look something like the attached picture found elsewhere on the forums, without the extra laminated pieces on the side, I would just leave it maple.
Thoughts?
