I've been through this too, it's almost impossible to remove, I've tried to paint "over" the poly... anyway, with all due respect to the OT ideas, now I think the finish/paint of an instrument should be tough and durable, so nothing against poly. It's more productive to choose the correct color when buying, or get used to one that we don't like so much, or sell it and buy another one, or another body...
Poly will never look vintage, of course. If anyone wants an instrument with an antique look, buy an old one, or with a nitro finish, and wait a decade. My thoughts.
