Yes, if it's like this, cutting the link will only bypass the tone control.Ok so if I simply cut the wire that links tone and volume pots everything will work just as fine, right? Since the ground wiring remains intact the tone pot gets simply bypassed, but the signal still goes to the output jack, right?

Are you asking if just a single volume pot wiring would work? If so, yes.Is there any reason why wiring a P bass similarly to the way an Esquire switch #1 is wired - so that the pickup goes thru the Vol pot then straight to the output - would not work?
FWIW, this esquire wiring would be cool on a P. Never saw the use for a fixed, all rolled off tone setting, but this is all useable.
