removing tone knob on p-bass?

Ok so if I simply cut the wire that links tone and volume pots everything will work just as fine, right? Since the ground wiring remains intact the tone pot gets simply bypassed, but the signal still goes to the output jack, right?

Yes, if it's like this, cutting the link will only bypass the tone control.

Is there any reason why wiring a P bass similarly to the way an Esquire switch #1 is wired - so that the pickup goes thru the Vol pot then straight to the output - would not work?

Are you asking if just a single volume pot wiring would work? If so, yes.
FWIW, this esquire wiring would be cool on a P. Never saw the use for a fixed, all rolled off tone setting, but this is all useable.

I wouldn’t remove the tone pot. On most passive basses I’ve had I haven’t used them much except for with P basses.

For some reason I use it with the P all the time. Takes the sheen off but retains the amps clarity and seems to give it a little nudge or bump in the lo-mids. It seems to work really well with flatwounds.
