Replacement 15" for Powerhouse Cab

I have not noticed any tonal difference between them.

Cast frames have a much higher resistance to frame warping or twisting when tightening to the baffle board of the cabinet. The magnet is the largest contributor to the weight factor, but just by comparing mass the cast frames appear to be heavier... I really don't know other than to compare shipping weights of similar units (i.e. same size magnet, voice coil, etc).

There is probably some sort of factoring for the effect the steel frame has on the magnetic field as well.

Ultimately it's going to depend on the sound you want. The EV15 has a defined midrange grind to it, I love those in multiples. But they're not known for big round bottom, they break up too soon. It sounds like a 3015 sound is what you're after for the big bouncy lows.

That doesn't look like an EV to me. EV speaker baskets are easily identifiable. All EV 10s, 12s, and 15s from as early as the 80s I've seen have the 8 huge legs sprawling out from the centre, this one has 6. That said, an EVM-15L or 15B should still do you good as a replacement.

you're right, but the "legs" are the exact same casting as are the terminals and magnet structure as an EVM. Did they make an OEM variant specific for Mesa or did they use another maker at the time? :hmm:

Thats not your typical EV15L or 15B frame as has been already pointed out. Although the cone looks like a 15L but I'd have to look again to see if it's got the trademark curvilinear shape. I doubt it.

Suggest a 3015 as well and stay away from the Kappa.

For speakers these days I prefer Eminence and Carvin.

I needed a replacement for my mid 90's Mesa Powerhouse. It too had the mystery EV style 15"s that look identical to the WGS BG15C's, one of them developed a slight coil drag that got significantly worse after a show.

I ordered a pair of Delta 15LFA's to get me through a couple of shows next weekend. When they arrive I'll mount them in, give a test and load up for the shows. Who know's, perhaps I'll really like them. I play hard rock and will be playing mostly originals with a few 90's covers (AIC, Silverchair, Nirvana, Radiohead, Cracker...etc).

For me anyway, a single 15L won't. My Mesa 1516 cab has the same single "400w" 15L, and if I use only that cab by itself wit my Bass 400, the speaker is already screamin playing my detuned 4 string. I was able to get away with it playing country in standard tuning, but not my current band's detuned hard rock.

The jump from 200 to 400 watts in the old EV's was in voice coil thermal handling only. Mechanical handling stayed the same and they still get the grind at the same power level they always did. I quite like them, especially for lower powered tube amps and/or for certain SS applications like the GK growl. But no, they still won't do deep, loud and clean at the same time.



So....did the OP ever find a speaker?
