Replacement Pickups For Ibanez SRFF805

Never said anything about not liking them . Just asked if anyone made replacement pickups. I actually do like the sound of these pickups they are fat and warm and more lower mid voiced than most Humbuckers I have heard. And that is a good thing because I am not fond of top end zing. Just wondering if there is something more versatile out there to try out.

I was only guessing whether you had at least unscrewed one of the PUs to see the cabling underneath or from what runs to the electronic cavity. But still, roughly we can find out by tapping it with metal thing like paper clip or other throughout its cover when soloed. Yet to be precise, you're right, it has to be opened.

I would imagine if it has 4 conductor wiring then at least I would install a mini switch to have option of run it in singles, cause I've been accustomed to Jazz PU configuration for 25+ years.

Have you learned how the coils were configured inside the BH1 soap bar cover?

How would you find that out without taking the pickups apart?

Just move a cut-off bass string or thin screwdriver across the tops of the pickups (try to hold it just above the top surface)- from end-to-end and side-to-side. Where it wants to stick is where the bars are, and if they are split in/near the center, you can feel that, too.
AFAIK, Bartolini doesn't show the magnet layout anywhere on their site for their pickups like EMG does. That's really nice of EMG to have that info avail for their customers.

That would definitely be less expensive but would also require drilling two holes in the body to mount them like the Fender Roscoe Beck Has. Wouldn't it? This is referring to the coil split switch. I will try the string thing see what I can find out . Thanks for the Suggestions.

Ibanez also make a version of that bass in natural finish with Norstrand Big Singles - but they are a different size unfortunately. Shame, as I like the grey finish of the other model but I'm not a fan of Bartolinis.

It appears they are not split . So any Ideas on what might work for pickups and Preamp for this. I would like to keep the active/ Passive switch And if possible the 3 way mid switch

even though they aren't split... still soapbar pickups, although not always, tend to be dual coils. And if indeed they are dual coil pickups, there is possibility that they may (or may not) be singled, which can yield different sound.

I have one of these basses, and contacted Nordstrand. Their stock pickups would require a rout, but for a bit over the price of their regular Big Split, they are custom making a set for my SRFF805 that will drop right into the body. The Bartolini's are "meh OK," but based on everything I have read about the Nordy's this should bring some new life. I do like how the base feels and plays, I like the acoustic sound. Disclosure - I picked it up used in good condition, so even with adding the upgraded pickups I'm just under the price of full price new, so one would need to decide how much they want to spend. I see there is another model in the 1405 series that does have the Nordy pickups, but even if the SRFF805 was new, with the upgraded Nordy pickups it would still come in under $1000 cheaper than the FF 1405 model

Hi Bob Gadd, did you ever get the Nordy pickups installed, I love the way my SRFF805 plays but I need to do something about the Pickups. I was wondering if you have them installed and how much it helped the tone.

"I was wondering if you have them installed and how much it helped the tone" - me too please, I would love to hear your thoughts on them. I like the tone of the stock pickups but wouldn't mind a little bit more bite and high end.

I recently replaced just my stock FF805 neck pickup with the Nordy BS - I've owned SR1405 and 1205 in the past, loved the tone. I'm very happy with the result - opened it up, crisp, just a great voicing, range and clarity to the Big Split. I generally favor or solo the neck pickup, so that worked for me. And of course, it's reversible.

The Nordy fits perfectly, it's an easy swap. There's no plastic cover on the Nordy, though, so it has a kind of fabric covering. And it's a bit more sharp-edged than the Bart, but so far that hasn't been a problem.

Would you mind disclosing the price of the custom Nordy pickups?
