Replacement speakers for Peavey 1516 cabinet

While you have the engine out anyway, put in a 2x4 brace across the back, with some big screws, and cupwashers from the back. They had really floppy backs, and bracing it will tighten up the sound.

My 1516 was sold a couple of years ago. The crossover was not modified, so the sound did not change all that much except for deeper, less boomy bass, due to lowering the box tuning. I added a piezo tweeter above and between the two 8" drivers. It sounded okay, IMO, but nothing like a T3W fEARful 15/6/1 (which actually could be used for listening to music). Interestingly, the 1516 and 15/6/1 are close in size, though the Peavey weighs a lot more. The T3W fEARful is in another class sound-wise; I'd suggest just building one instead of putting lipstick on the pig....

Thanks a lot for the reply. Maybe I will try keeping the 15" Black Widow and just swap one 8" for a Beta8CX coaxial with ADS1001 tweeter to see how it sounds without too much investment in time and money. I don't play with a bass amp anymore so if I can use that cab with my modeler it would be great as I don't think I can get a lot money if I sell it.
I already have an EV ZLX12P top and ZXA1 sub for playing guitar/bass thru the modeler, just wanted something more conventionally looking and fairly transparent as the modeling is doing the rest.

FWIW, the BW 1502-4 pales in comparison with the 3015LF in terms of power handling and output in the low bass area. An unmodded 1516 is likely worth more on the used market than one which has been modified. I modded my 1516 long before fEARfuls were even thought of. If I were to do it all again, I would just build a T3W fEARful and not bother wasting my time making modifications to a heavy, substandard, cabinet.

Tinkering with speakers can be fun; if you enjoy the process, and don't mind if it doesn't quite turn out the way you want, it might be worth doing. I'm more of a "journey" than a "destination" sort of person, so I get that. However, I'm guessing that most people would prefer a properly engineered cabinet that works well without a lot of messing around. For that, the T3W fEARful is the obvious choice.

I would like a Fearful 12/6/1 cube, that would be enough for me as it will used primary for guitar (modeler) and secondary for bass (modeler or amp). However I live in Canada and noway to audition before committing, also no builders. That's the reason behind modding the 1516.

A T3W 12/6/1 would probably be enough for me as well. When I built mine, a friend wanted to build a 15/6/1 so we built two of them. However, it is rare that I need something that big. If you're wanting a flat response, monitor-type, sound, the T3W is definitely the way to go. Although I can't speak for anyone else, I am a fairly discerning listener and the T3W fEARful sounds pretty darn good to me....

Tried the 1516 this weekend with my Eleven Rack (of one side of old QSC 1200) and it sounded good using a Plexi model for guitar and an SVT model for bass. I would say for guitar it sounded almost as good as any powered PA speaker and better than all guitar cab I tried. For bass it was a bit "laid back", maybe not enough power.
I was surprised that it sounded a bit bright (only had to lower the tone pot on the guitar) and a bit two-dimensional.

I'm about to crack open an old 1516 that was a wonderful practice cabinet until we added a second guitarist and I tried to be heard. Pushed it a bit too far ..... rattle rattle.

Anyhoo, I plan on attempting a rejuvination, so years down the road, I'm tipping my hat to the silly necroer that maybe perhaps will have helped me ....... "not an english major"...
