Replacement speakers for Vintage Ampeg 8x10

Well... I like vintage gear. I like the big silver monolith of a cabinet -that is the ampeg 8x10.

My band is the loudest, dirtiest band ever. Uncomfortably loud. I'm currently playing a Peavey classic 400 -> 2x15's and an Ampeg V9 -> 4x15's.

This is not about trying to get an affordable cabinet, or spend a bunch on a Hi-Fi bass rig. If I wanted an Epifani or Accugroove rig - I'd just go buy one. I'm looking for that nasty, gritty 8x10 sound with speakers that will break up easily, but will still take the abuse of an SVT that's dimed.

Yeah thats the problem with the square back 810's. I feel you need BOTH CABS to really handle the power of the SVT properly; or be realistic at where you set the volume control.

There's only one speaker that should go into that cab... Da originals, (or close replicas) if you are going to drop big $$$ on some other speaker you're better off finding a purist to buy that cab from you and restore it, and you pick up a cheaper modern cab and put whatever speaker you want to jack with.

At least you won't be carving up a collector's piece and stuffing big dust into it.

The tone in the square back cab was the SPEAKERS, not the square back. They put the same cab volume in the tilt back cab..

Basically don't put the blower on the 1970 Vette, butcher the 1980 Volare' instead. Shoot I got an empty tilt back I'd trade you for the squareback... :-)

Has anyone tried the Jensen Blackbird Alnico's for bass? They seem to be pretty much EXACTLY what I'm looking for...

The only thing I'm worried about is the freq. response... looks like 70hz-6khz.

Yea, they're expensive, but hey- if they'll do what I want them to then I'd shell it out.

The way I see it.... the Mod 10/32 ohm are built as an SVT replacement- and they only do 70Hz too. And I'm willing to bet the CTS originals were only rated to 70Hz as well. Thoughts?

I lean toward the S2010s based on word from various vendors and the superior xmax.

Regarding getting a custom rig: Just because a custom cabinet is custom doesn't mean it has to be "hi fi." Don from LDS makes an amazingly beautiful Fender-style vintage cabinet...and if you design it correctly it will sound like an Ampeg 8x10 but weigh half as much and take twice as much power. A mix of modern drivers and guitar drivers is the ticket.

If you're in the states anyway which it sounds like you are, I heartily suggest you call Don from LDS and tell him what your tonal and aesthetic goals are. He has made some amazing looking vintage cabs with modern drivers that kick mucho booty :)

The Webers are called the Alnico ABA10's. I saw them on one site that said there was a release delay because of Ted Weber's bad health. That was old info...he died this summer, but are they not going to release them now? Still not listed on www.webervst.com .

with the 2510's, its not so much that speakers will break up (they will when pushed though), but an SVT head that is dimed will go into that knarly SVT grind. i don't know if anyone makes speakers that actually 'like' to break up and handle alot of power. even celestion greenbacks have their limit as to how many watts they can take (25-35). celestion vintage 30's actually can handle 70 watts a piece but we're talking about 10's.

i would forget about the CA (aluminum cone Eminences). i had four of them and all of them ended up seperating from their surrounds.
i had to reglue them several times myself with epoxy to hold them together.

Eminence Beta 10's?

I put them in my straightback 6x10 build. They sound good, though I don't have much experience of vintage 8x10s.

I'm running an SVT VR and they seem to have pleasing top end. I think they go up to 5k from the factory specs.

I'm not trying to convince you anymore, I just want to understand how a company that builds custom spec'd cabinets to the design of a user is "nothing like what you're looking for."

You're going to spend more on replacing your speakers than you would on getting a cabinet custom designed that looks exactly like you want it to and sounds like the original. I don't see how you would be ill served by shooting him an email and asking for a quote. But again, to each his own I guess :)

If Don at LDS can make an 810 that sounds every bit as good as the old 810 and costs less than buying speakers for an existing 810 that you got for free or dirt cheap, I will buy one tomorrow...well I would if I didn't already have one. I don't see how it's possible, though.

I know I'm a few years late on this discussion, but FWIW, I'll add my experience with RE-SPEAKERING MY 810E.

I adopted an all-speakers trashed but structurally sound 810e discarded at my old rehearsal space. I ordered an 8 pack of the Jensen Mod 10-50 32 ohm 50 watters for pretty cheap from Fliptops before I researched, & then started hearing bad things about them (like they'd blow etc.), which fueled my suspicions about them (& maybe guilt for choosing the lowest $$ 32ohm 8-pk I could find). Fliptops (Bruce) said they didn't feel that confidant about 'em either, even for my 100w V4 head. He said he'd take 'em back & bought this 8pk instead: ELECTRO - HARMONIX E-H/Eminence 10svt 101024B 32ohm -- a "direct replacement" for the fridge.

I am HAPPY with the EH 10SVTs still! I wanted to own and get to know the sound of a legit SVT sealed 8x10 & I think I have that. However, I wish that I had at least loaded up those Jensen Mod 10-50 spkrs & checked them out first w/ my V4 head before I shipped 'em back. I know John_K is a fan of putting 4 of these in an 810e to help the cab get in touch with it's ancestral Fridge roots, & I can't help but think the eight Mods wouldn't have been great under my V4 & been a nice combination... Anybody ever done that?
