I was recently given a used Ashdown King Combo 8x10 combo amp for free, and used it for two gigs after which the amp blew. (wonder why I got it for free).
After the gigs, I quickly realised that it's totally overkill and a pain in the back to move, as it weighs 100 kgs. And as the demand for giant combo amps is very low in Denmark, the cost of fixing the amp would not suffice the bother of selling it. Therefore, I am thinking of repurposing the drivers by making some new cabs myself as a hobby project, as I am "in between jobs". (this also means cost over quality). I am initially thinking of either making 2x10 cabs, or 2 2x10 + 1 4x10, To make them much more portable and stackable (I believe ohms can be fixed with som clever wiring and multiple inputs). I am planning to make them sealed boxes, because it is easier, cheaper, and because the original cab is four horizontally sealed 2-driver boxes anyway.
Now, I have done some research the last couple of days, and I have recieved the specs for the drivers (SICA - Z00686) and plotted them into various Thiele/Small parameter calculators (online and WinISD). And here come my questions for you:
1. The Ashdown website claims the original cab is "Carefully tuned", yet the four 2-driver boxes vary in volume. The top one is 55L, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are all 49.7L. The 2nd also has large handle-cavities, which reduce its volume. Does this make sense to you? All drivers are identical.
2. I have used various Thiele/Small parameter calculators to find the optimal volume, and two different calulators tell me that 12.95 is optimal for one driver in a non-padded sealed box. I am told that 2 drivers in one box is just twice the volume (=25.90L). This does not make sense to me when the original boxes are much larger. Am I missing something?
3. A 2x10 cab will be 300W and 16 or 4 ohm, while a 4x10 would be 600W, 2, 8 or 32 ohm, correct?
4. Is it really worth it to do vented boxes? I do see the low-end boost in WinISD, but is it worth the hassle + added difficulty?
